I think McCain is still thinking he has a shot at President in 2012.
Gramps would be 76 in 2012 and Reagan was about 78 when he left office.
In watching McCains actions since lost, I have noticed he has not assumed the "maverick" role he kept saying he was. This most recent outburst where he criticized Obama for not attacking the Iranian leaders was certainly ill advised. After all, if Obama came out strongly for the moderates it would be like Bin Laden coming out for an American candidate.
So whats Gramps game?
I think McCain is trying to reverse his strategy from 2008. In 2008 he was about the only "moderate" or at least not wacky, right wing candidate from the Senate.
Yet, instead of charting a moderate course in the campaign, he basically sold out to the furthest right wing of his party. And McCain lost the independents.
I think Gramps strategy for 2012 is to suck up to the right wing for the next couple of years. Then as the election gets closer the "maverick" McCain will re-emerge. With right wing wingnuts like Foxy Mommie and "intelligent designer" Sam Brownback, the only serious candidate who might get the few Republican moderate vote is Romney. So Gramps may think he could beat the Republican right wing fest of candidates and snare the nomination. And after 4 years of Obama, McCain could basically say to the right wing if they don't him, are they really prepared to sit it out and let Obama cruise?
Without Bush around his neck, and running as a moderate Republican, Gramps may think he has a chance. He may even announce he will be a one term Pres. to put peoples mind at ease that he might go more senile than he is.
