Is Masters in IT worth it?

Hi all,

I've got a Computing degree right now and I'm thinking of continuing to obtain my Masters in IT. Some say that since I've got an IT degree, why bother taking Masters in IT? It's basically the same. They advised me to take up certifications like MCSD and Java Certified <insert qualification here>.

And then there are those who advised me to go for my Masters and then go for my MBA (ugh... not ready for this now {g}) later; like a few years later.

So what do you guys think?

Masters in IT now or certifications?

Thanks.

what is your degree right now? computing degree sounds odd...

im sure theres a masters program for IT, but i doubt you would learn much extra... just go get certified in all sorts of stuff... A+, Novell, MSCE, Cisco etc...those will help probably more a MS in IT.

(i have a BS in IT, so there is such a thing)

It does sound odd, but it's something like a Computer Science degree minus the calculations. The exact title of my degree is Bachelor of Computing from Australia; and there's such a thing as well.

Wouldn't you get at least more recognised if you get a Masters instead of just a Bachelor's degree when you apply for a job? At least you stand out from the crop of pple with just a Bachelor's degree IMO.

I think it's a one year course; part time of course. I was thinking of going for the masters now and then the certifications later.

I say forget about the Masters... go out and earn some cash now before it gets too late... I mean, more and more people are going into computer science these days, everyone is looking to get a piece of the pie... I am sure the industry will get over-populated in a couple of years (if it isn't already now)....

Yes, while that's true, you'll still need to earn a living and to get ahead of the rest, you need something that they don't have....
