Is mass effect 2 for me?

Play ME1, it's far more interesting in my opinion. That game took hold of me and did not let go until I made it through pretty much every single bit of the story and the side stories.

ME2 feels like a watered down version of the first one and removed many of the things I enjoyed in the first one. I'm sure I'll finish it eventually, but it's been a slog and I can't play for more than an hour or so before getting bored and having to turn it off. Quite a disappointment actually.

your thoughts of ME2 somewhat mirror my own--though for me, it was only at the end did I find myself strangely disappointed with a game that I still believe is quite awesome--it's the length, and lack of closure.

My recommendation would be to wait until 3 is out, then play both 2 and 3 back to back.

I think 2 is very good--story isn't quite as good as the first, mainly b/c there is an actual arch, with closure in ME1, but where it takes you in the 2nd one is nice, but a swift kick in the balls if you're hoping for some closure.

Basically, the entire game:

Loyalty missions for all of your party members, then about 2 or 3 story missions. The game ends on the last story mission, when the story is just about to start.

well, i picked up ME1 and put about 3 hours into it. its pretty fun so far. not quite what i was expecting, in a good way. glad i got it. thanks guys.

Mass Effect 1 was fine, but got into your typical RPG "grind" a little too much for my tastes. Didn't stop me from enjoying a play and a replay though. 🙂

ME2 has a MUCH better story IMO, fewer repetitive grind missions, less emphasis on credits and done with the stupid inventory system (selling back every item I found after every mission, micro-managing weapon upgrades for specific missions against specific opponents, ugh). And the 2 DLC missions for ME2 are well worth it IMO, especially "Lair of the Shadow Broker". You should hear about him in a couple of more hours if you haven't already. 🙂

Also, the ME2 castes have more effect on gameplay, better AI as well.

Agreed completely. This really bummed me out after I absolutely loved the first. I do, however, see how it could be really neat when you look at the series as an entire trilogy.

Plus the story missions build up the characters a lot more than ME1 IMO. Besides, building the team is part of the story. In any case, stage is set for an epic 3rd installment. I have the highest faith in Bioware's writing at this point. 🙂

i thought the 2nd to be far better than the 1st
w/o getting into semantics
its far more polished and refined experience
it impressed me more than any game for close to the last decade(sp)
call it interactive cinema
rpg lite
its a landmark game, and imo superior to the 1st
