And should it be retired like most other technologies (e.g.: betamax) since e-mail is pretty much everywhere, faster, and simpler?

Not everyone has a computer. Not all mail can be sent as an email. Email completely replacing mail is about as likely as credit cards completely replacing cash.

That's much more practical. Maybe not strictly credit cards as we know it now, but a system where all our money is digitized seems probable..

that must be the best comparison, paper will never cease to exist either well in my lifetime
