Do you think it's necessary to hone the skill of lying to do better in life? Is it better to be a good liar or to not lie at all?

Discuss.

That requires a thorough definition of "do better" on your part.

If you want to be a lying piece of selfish self-centered ****** willing to say anything to get what you want, then yeah I guess lying skills would make you "do better" in life.

If you actually want to become a decent human being, then no, it will not help you "do better" in life.

As long as they are only white lies, yes they're lies but you need to lie about somethings to cover your a$$ sometimes

Necessary? No.

White lies don't fall into this category IMO since I don't view needlessly hurting people's feelings as a requirement for honesty.

Ultimate confidence in your word is one of the few things that can transcend all material value.

Yeah I guess it could be in certain situations.

I'd say the necessity is inversely proportionate to how good looking the person is.

Dateline or one of those shows did a piece a few years back where they took a handsome guy, a beautiful woman, and a slightly less than average looking balding guy, dropped them off in the middle of Manhattan with $500 and four tasks to perform.

The good looking ones got people to do stuff for them with little effort, while the average guy had to use a lot of guile.

That is dependent on what you are striving for. Then it is a question of whether or not what you are striving for is necessary.

There's always a respectable and more noble way to achieve your goals without needing to resort to lying.

it is a possible developing flaw that invites emotional weakness, destroys characters and does not help uphold patriot-like behavior.

for most Americans, they like to tell the truth. but because opposites exist so well in our Universe, you are going to have to learn how to recognize lying and deceit so you don't get thrown overboard by their malicious psychopath-etic ways where integrity and positive focus may be far from their immediate goals.

here's some support:

This thread actually originated when I was thinking about posting "how do you act when you are wrongfully/rightfully accused?" Let's say you're accused of stealing something. If you really did steal something but want to make people believe you didn't, how would you act?

Then, after thinking about that thread for a little while, I realized I would probably get flamed over this. "you're a lying buttwipe," and such and such. I decided to stop that thread at the source and started this one.

:)

Personally, I think it's necessary to build good lying skills, but I just wanted to see what other people thought.

lying is bad,
at the same time i feel like sometimes i just cant help myself. like when im put in a position where i could hurt someone's feelings, ill tell a white lie. i know its wrong, but forcing the truth out of my mouth is extremely difficult in those situations.

also if someone asks me a question that isnt their business, but if i refused to answer then thatd make things too obvious, then I will lie to that person as well. i dont feel like anyone has the right to invade into my private life, that is unless ive broken the law or something. of course it is still ideal not to lie in those situations as well

and obviously of course, if you need to save someone's life by lying (like what some people did around the Nazi's) then lying might make sense there too, but again, lying is never ideal.
