if i install longhorn after i install windows xp, would i have the option of getting rid of longhorn later without losing any files from xp?

Be safe and do a dual boot.

Also, just so you are warned, most threads talking about someone having a copy of Longhorn get locked...

While I agree that most people that say they have longhorn now didnt get it legally, it is possible for people to be running a legit copy of it. Microsoft handed out a copy to everyone who attended the PDC a couple of days ago.

The "uprade" option in Longhorn is disabled, so what you're describing isn't a possibility anyway.
The only install option (for the leaked, pre-beta version) is: fresh install.

And why the hell would you want to trust anything *important* to a pre-beta OS anyway? 😕

That is so true. And if it is indeed an illegal copy.... well HAHAHA hope you lose all your data.
