Hi,

have been using Logitech products since kindergarden.
The one i am using is still rock, but just want to get a new combo for the new year. (wireless keyboard with a few media keys + G5)

I mostly do just browsing, but sometimes do play FPS.
Is this combo good/ok for gaming?
Logtech page

Is the mice good when moving around? seems the mice has a very big surface and may create plenty of friction which may not be a good idea for gaming. Is it true?

I don't usually spend this much for a keyboard and mice combo. However just want to treat myself a little better for the coming years. (last time i bought keyboard was 7 years ago a mice was 3)

or are they any better choices out there? budget US$150 for both, i don't care if corded if necessary.

If your primary concern is comfort and doing work on the computer first, and gaming is a relative afterthought, I would definitely recommend the set. But if gaming really is more of a priority then stay away as this product was not built for gaming at all. The biggest knock against it is the fact that it employs increased input latency in order to boost battery time.

That being said, as far as a recommendation...what was your comment about the G5 about? Is that your current mouse? (if so, is it the old one thumb button, or the newer two button?) Does it have to be Logitech?

Other things would help with a recommendation would be:

what is your current mouse?
how do you like to hold it?
what kind of games are most important to you?

My G5(1thumb ver.) is not working right. When I press the middle button, it will also scroll up which is not intended.

so you mean the MX revolution is putting more latency to increase the battery time?

Standard mice operate with a USB polling rate of 125Hz (8ms). Most all gaming mice will operate at least at 500Hz (2ms) or even 1000Hz (1ms). Most all wireless keyboards/mice employ a reduced polling rate of about half of 125...usually somewhere around 67-90Hz. By reducing the number of times per unit of time data is sent to and from the wireless device, the device is therefor doing less work and less power is required, thus improving battery life and less need for recharging.

Many standard mice can even be "overclocked" to run at a higher polling rate of 500 or 1000Hz, however because of the way wireless works, you cannot force it poll more than it is built for. Thus far the only wireless mouse that operates on a gaming grade polling rate is the G7 @ 500Hz. The new Microsoft Sidewinder X8 is going to operate the same 500Hz wireless as the G7 and the new Razer Mamba is going to be capable of 1000Hz wireless (however these will come in @ $100 and $130 USD respectively).

Have you contacted Logitech about replacing the G5? They have outstanding customer support. Note the MX revolution is not a hardcore gaming mouse.

The G5 is 3 years old. Is warranty from Logitech has that long of service?
I have lost the receipt anyways and would like to a new feeling to a new mouse.

MX 5500 combo is a bit expensive for what it is and as others stated, the MX Revolution is a pretty weak gaming mouse. How important is wireless to you for either or? There's some pretty nice options for wired gaming keyboards and tons of nice wired mice. I used to swear by wireless mice in the past due to the freedom of movement, but the G9 has convinced me otherwise. Maybe something like a DiNovo wireless keyboard with a high performance wired mouse would be a happy medium for similar price.

Just posting on this as I was googling up the keyboard. I bought this set two years ago, it is good for general purpose but I HATE the keyboard for gaming, the keys don't press properly and they don't seem to be at a comfortable location for high intensity keyboard typing (e.g. in Starcraft). The mouse is very good however.

I had been using a normal MX Revolution 2.4GHz radio mouse for at least 5 years. I loved it except for the interference caused by WiFi and GSM phones. I recently switched to the MX5500 Revolution that's Bluetooth instead.

This did two things:
1. The polling rate dropped from 125Hz to 50Hz(yes, less than half) from the RF to the Bluetooth version.
2. The Bluetooth version is not as susceptible to interference from other devices due to the pairing/secured nature.

Overall, the increased resistance to noise is a significantly more important factor in gaming with the mouse. Sure, the precision isn't as good, but there are no more moments where I lose control completely.

I play a lot of games that span many different genre's. TF2, Civ5, Bloodline Champions, BFBC2... Overall, I don't have problems gaming with it.

I'd recommend the mouse in particular to anyone looking for a good, feature packed, and durable mouse with great battery life, gamer or not. It may not be up to the standards of the most 'hardcore' gamers, but it's good enough for me.

I don't game with the keyboard that came with the MX5500 set. I use a Dinovo Edge. So I can't speak for the keybaord.

Horrible for gaming. I use the combo on an htpc where its a nice set but the latency is brutal for FPS play
