Is Lightning for Thunderbird secure?

Hi all,

I've set up a calendar on google for my group at work to use and have installed Lightning and Provider so that it can be accessed through Thunderbird. I'd like my coworkers to start using this, but one of them has voiced concern over security issues. He's afraid of have calendar info online, as if somebody else gets their hands on it, then they'll know when he's away from home.

Does anybody know how secure this is? I'd imagine Google is fairly safe, but I'm not sure about the Lightning and Provider software for Thunderbird.

I'm guessing most of you are in the camp that it's safe and he has nothing to worry about, but what can I tell him that will make him feel better about it?

Thanks!

Specific to the calendar:

Provider will use https so its at least encrypted when its synced. The biggest exposure is not the syncing process, its the fact its hosted offsite (by Google).

Well Google now provides the option of accessing Gmail (and I guess also Calendar) using only https. Makes me feel a little safer, but still not sure how easy it would be for hackers or what not to get their hands on it.

Is there a reason why you'd want to use Google's calendar, instead of running a calendar internally?
