is LCD burn-in a sign of an aging monitor?

aka: am I justified in wanting to buy a new one? :p

lately I've noticed some pretty bad persistent imaging on my primary monitor that I use for gaming... I don't necessarily notice it in-game, but when I close out or switch to something else, I can see a screen impression of the static UI elements (especially bad when playing WoW or Civ for multiple hours).

I can turn the monitor off and they'll go away after a couple hours (typically overnight, since I don't run my computer 24/7), but I'm curious if this is normal or if it could be signs of an aging screen.

I don't know if it really has anything to do with the monitor's age per se, but it might. An older panel design that is being driven to hard via "overdrive" techniques (if you're using them) or high contrast settings can exhibit more image persistence than a newer one. Not necessarily because the panel itself is aging, but more due to the fact that it is an older design in the first place.

Yes. I had a 20" NEC IPS eventually start to do the same thing. LCDs in general don't have this issue, but time catches up eventually.

If you've had your LCD for a few years and have the cash on hand, don't worry about justification...
Buy a shiny new LED LCD monitor and don't look back. ;)

My old faithful Soyo Pearl (IPS) got to where it was very slow to turn on.
I may have been able to get by with replacing caps on the power supply board, but the thing has a few years under its belt.
I had been toying with the idea of a new LED LCD before the starting issue popped up.
I found the best price on a Dell Ultrasharp U2412M and pulled the trigger.
The Dell won't be here for a few days.

:colbert: My philosophy is that your monitor is the main PC component you look at every day, so don't skimp.
