i have a friend that has a broken dell p3-500 latitude. i was wondering if i can use that laptop's memory for my compaq?

or is laptop memory propiartary? ie: compaq memory only works for compaq laptops?

No its not proprietary. Both laptops should use pc100 so-dimm ram, and ususally pc133 downclocks. So you should be alright.

I have a Compaq Armada m700 1000mhz. I bought 2 generic 256mb pc133 modules, but the system says incorrect memory installed. I bought the computer with a 64mb pc133 and 128mb pc100 modules. The exhisting pc133 downclocked... so why won't my new ones?

Some PC133 require a higher voltage whice some laptop motherboards will not be able to support.
