Is lapping the processor really worth it?

I have a celeron 300a that I am thinking about lapping the core because it is quite uneven with my heatsink even after the arctic silver is applied. I have it running at 450 at default voltage but I want to get it higher.Thanks for any info.

Yes, it helped my old celerons out a lot. But don't lap any new surface mount CPU's (P3's and duron/tbirds)

I agree with office boy lapping cpus definately helps. But I wouldn't lap current generations p3, c2, althon and durons.
I even lapped my GPU on the video card and that helped greatly.

If your running a C300@450 lapping wont help unless your looking to try for 504. I ran my 300a@504 with lapped and peltier rig. Ended up frying it cuz the pelt wasnt quite as sealed as i thought.

how high will it go if you up the voltage to 2.2 or 2.3 volts?

lapping would help if you plan on using higher voltage at higher frequency coz both variables will produce more heat than the standard 2v at 450Mhz.

Also, which Celeron did you get? socket or slot? tray or box? which week?

I have the OEM socket from week 9934 (as I remember) they were one of the ones that did the magical 600Mhz.

but for me, I didn't lap (too lazy) and I used the original Alpha heatsinks. I bought 7 of the CPUs and all of them posted at 600 and ran very stable at 558Mhz, which I am using now. Oh...at 2.2V

for my other C300A that I got in week 9823 slot1, it wasn't that good and I could only hit 463Mhz at 2.3volts ...but I didn't try a good heatsink.
