Interested in taking some self defense / work-out courses.. I have heard a lot of about Krav Maga and did some searching and it seems to be directed mostly at women, is that true? I am a 27 male, any have any experience w/it?

The only way to fins out is to attend a class. See if you can attend one class to see if you would like it and feel comfortable doing it.

From what I've seen Krav maga is more direct simple real world self defense than it is a workout or a sport. I think if your goal
is to learn effective self defense this is the way to go. If you're looking more for exercise than something else would be a better
choice.

I believe that Krav Manga is the official self defense style taught & used by the Israeli military. From what I've seen, it looks pretty effective.

I like it, but still prefer ninpo taijutsu. It's nice to see a style getting popular by focusing on pain creation and efficiency, rather than esoteric flash.

It was developed by the israeli military for combat applications.

I'm not in Krav Maga, nor am I interested in it, but supposedly, there's a police/military variant, and a civilian variant. Guess who's stuck with the nonlethal stuff . . . :p

Here's a good martial arts school in the KC area -- my brother in one of the instructors there, and I can tell you from my own experience that they take self-defense seriously.

Linky.

It's on the MO side of things, though. Here's one closer to you (in the same association):

In any martial art you really can get kids / women classes or hardcore depending on the class/instructor/area so you need to check out any class.

Not me. I start hand-to-hand combat training in 5 weeks. :D

The military has these things called "guns" that kinda eliminate the need for HtH . . . not altogether completely, but HtH training is brief if my impressions are corrct . . ..

When they announce its time to learn how to fight with edged weapons, bring your e-tool.

Depends on the 'soldier' you are becoming. Everyone gets basic hand to hand. Some get a lot more.

CQB HtH since 2001 is a 40-50 hour program for the Marines, and I think the Army, but I'm not sure. If you're gun jams or you run out of ammo, you need to know how to at least try and survive.

I'd rather use my Ka-Bar than a fvcking shovel! :p
Though General Smith used it quite well during Vietnam.

I've always been interested in this form...I've seen a few people around here taking it, but have never seen it being "used" extensively. And I'm sure it seems geared towards women, because of the theory behind the form, and because women tend to seek these "self-defense" classes.

The reason Krav Maga is often directed at women is because it is a simple to learn/execute self defense style that focuses on the "defense" aspect in that its goal is to take down an attacker as quickly and efficiently as possible. This is in large contrast to most "martial arts" which have a fair bit of offensive technique instead of defensive.
