Is knowing how to swim being a requirement for college a bizarre thing or not?

I think knowing how to swim is a good life skill to have whether a college requires it or not.

Georgia Tech used to have a drown proofing class. It made it clear that school was sink or swim.

It's pretty common. A few guys in Navy delayed entry with me don't know how to swim, they'll be learning at basic training :D

I know when my brother went to Grove City it was a requirement. He actually dreaded it I think... How high school of colleges to make it a requirement!

college still has a suprising amount of highschoolish stuff in it. Learning to swim? Shrugs : if you go to the school, you follow their rules.

they offer "beginners swimming" usually... and to get an A, it's just about attendance and participation.

cornell makes you pass a swim test to graduate. i think it has something to do w/ some students having drowned in a nearby lake (cayuga) decades ago. anyway, didn't bother me one bit. besides, you get to scope out all the freshman hotties for hookup potential :D

Read P&N and see what kind of things people think. Swimming requirements will look pretty mundane.

My HS required you to be able to swim before you could graduate.

The question you should be asking is: why DON'T I know how to swim so this requirement would be a joke?

If you can't swim after college, odds are you will never learn. Doesn't seem like an unreasonable requirement to me, especially because it is very useful.

People who can't swim had better be missing either both arms or both legs. Any other reason to not knowing how is a waste of time.
