I know it was just one role, in "No Country for Old Men", but the actor I have been most impressed by, in recent memory, is Javier Bardem.

Actually, that reminded me I really like Josh Brolin. Great in No Country, Valley of Elah, American Gangster, and Milk.

GOD DAMN IT YOU FORGOT GOONIES!!!!!!!!!!

😛

Oh crap, I had no idea he was actually in that. Man, what an all-star cast in that movie.

Umm I would say he is a good actor but not the best. I mean his characters in Edward Scissor hands and Pirates of the Caribbean were really good, but I don't think they alone put him over the top of everyone else.

Edward Norton's work is impressive, and his work in American History X was really really good.
Kevin Spacey should be noted, as he has played a good amount of roles successfully.

Tom Cruise is just Tom Cruise..I woudln't say he is a great actor.

Tom Hanks is obviously really talented, but he plays the same role in a lot of movies..Forest Gump was amazing performance tho.

Will Smith is really good but he also hasn't done anything that is crazy omg acting skills that I can think of. He can deff can do a range of emotions and make a totally believable performance, but I cant think of a film where it is like...is that will smith..really?

After watching Public Enemy..Christian Bale is obviously limited to certain roles.

Leonardo is amazing...you know what..i always disliked him as a kid, but I would have to put him up to at least 2nd place..

And Brad Pitt is obviously talented as well.

I guess It would be A tie of Decaprio, Norton, and Spacey for me.

I saw 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape' before Leonardo was a house hold name. I actually thought they got a retarded kid to play that role. That is how good he is. Only later did i find out who he was at that young age.

hahaha thats really funny. i was pretty much already in love with him at that point... or maybe i saw it after i fell in love with him... i forget! 😛

You lost me with willy wonka. God that movie sucked hard...it was unfuckingwatchable actually.

He's pretty good but only time will tell how good he is ultimately. There are a number of great actors out there currently. I think he's one of them but the greatest? Jury is still out on that.

How about Russell Crowe? How about Matt Damon? Nicholas Cage? Orlando Bloom? Ralph Fiennes? Jake Gyllenhaal? Sean Penn? Robert Downey Jr?

I'm not even sure what "of our time" means.

Oh hellz no. Nicholas Cage is godawful, he has been decent in about 3 roles his entire career.

You can't blame the actor for a horrible script. He seems to have poor judgement but actors aren't generally known for that.

Actually he's pretty average imo. He delivers lines exactly the same way in every movie. Most actors are guilty of that. The truly good ones are completely different in every role.

Bloom is the same way.

The rest on your list are all great.

True to a degree, but he overacts in almost every single role I see him in. It may work out occassionally, but to blame all of his bad performances on the scripts does major disservice to the writers when part, even a good portion, of the blame definitely lies with Cage.

I think Cage really mails it in on some roles but he's definitely got chops

Leaving Las Vegas, Matchstick Men, Adaptation are all really good films

yes this is true BUT he does definitely deliver his lines in pretty much the same way every time... in his same tone and voice. its a little irritating. he is exactly himself pretty much in all the roles with some slight character modifications

Tommy Lee Jones is one of my favorites. Actually, all four of the "old guys" in the movie Space Cowboys are good actors: Clint Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland, and James Garner.

It's just one of those categories that's impossible to pick out the best one. If I had to pick the best actor it would be based on how well they attract my attention with their screen presence. JD and countless others have done very well in that regard.

You have to be kidding? He is like the worst actor ever. Some of his movies are decent but his acting is hard to watch for me. I did like him in Weatherman though. He fit that role pretty well.

Leonardo DiCaprio is the best actor of this generation, I firmly believe that.

thats surprising. i thought most of you guys wouldnt have ever mentioned him because hes like, all pretty boy etc. i definitely think he is a GREAT actor. he has been in so many movies that i feel warrant him to get the praise.

I tend to agree with that. The "pretty boy" stigma is only a result of Titanic. Everything before and after has been anything but. He's very gifted, and it doesn't hurt that a dude like Scorsese has more or less adopted him as his new DeNiro.

And the truth is that he was very good in Titanic. It was a totally different character than what he played in movies like Blood Diamond or the Departed.
It was just such a sappy movie with an over the top chick flick script.

If you go by Oscars alone then guys with 2 (which is the most ever including greats like Nicholson and Brando) stand out:
Kevin Spacey (1 supporting), Tom Hanks (both lead), Denzel Washington (1 supporting), Sean Penn (both lead), and Daniel Day Lewis (both lead). I would say that DDL is the most impressive because he's only made 13 flicks. 2 out of 13 is sick.

Also consider that Depp has NEVER won an Oscar, only Nominated 3 times. DiCaprio, nom 3 times. Will Smith, Norton only nominated twice. Giamatti, only nom once. Bale, V.Vaughn, never.

Damon, won 1 and nom once. Cage, Crowe, P.SeymourH won 1 and nom twice.

The English Patient won best picture.
That tells you how meaningless Oscars are.

As much as Sean Penn annoys me with his politics, he is an amazingly talented actor, capable of playing many different roles.

I would agree, Penn is phenomenal and deserved last year's leading actor for Milk.

RE: Oscars, they usually get it right. MOST of the films that win, or at least some of the nominations are phenomenal IMO. E.g. last year, I didn't like Slumdog or Benjamin Button but Milk and Frost/Nixon were awesome.

I'm hoping that Penn, Hanks, or DDL can win one more Oscar to be the King of the Oscars (for Lead role). Spacey and Denzel are most capable of taking the title as well.

All in all, a good litmus test for versatility would be Forest Gump. Can you see any of the men above playing that role like Hanks? Probably all of them. Maybe even Depp, Norton, or Damon. C.Bale or N.Cage? Probably not as well.
