Is jogging really good for you?

Everything is bad for you, but I'd say that I'd rather have bad knees than die from a coronary.

Jogging is good for you.
Humans are natural long distance runners. We are build to take the shock. Just try to get some decent shoes and stay off of concrete.

I'm probably one of the more hardcore runners on this board, and while I endlessly tout the benfits of running (or jogging even), I have to warn people that unless you're made for running (eg- not too overweight, good biomechanics), running more than a few miles a week could lead to injury. I run 60-70 miles a week, but I'm skinny and have good form. Running is high-impact, and if you don't absorb the shock well enough, you could get hurt. Regardless, I always suggest giving running a try, because it is a great workout and is great fun 🙂

Definitely get some good shoes. Go to a specialty running store and ask for help. Everybody has a different foot and stride and needs shoes to accomodate. You can't just to go to Foot Locker and pick the cheapest or coolest looking shoe there because chances are you'll hurt yourself. Try to find a local running store or a Fleet Feet.

Also, start out slow and short, maybe a mile at most at a comfortable pace. Try to work your way up to longer runs, but if you're not cut out for distance running, try not to go over 4-5 miles a day or 30 miles a week. And if you are made for running, then by all means run as much as you want! 😀

It also depends on what surface you run on. The resevoir in NYC doesn't use concrete so that the runners knees take less of a beating.

if shock is the issue, wouldn't roller blading or biking give you many of the same benefits without the shock to the body?

biking doesn't burn as many calories as running, but is still a good workout, especially mountain biking. I have no idea how rollerblading compares but I imagine it would be up there too. And yes, minus the impact. I actually know a guy who's a distance runner who blades a couple times a week (like 30-40 miles at a time); I should ask him how it compares.

i was thinking about picking up blading. i'm 5'11" 225 lbs, so running or (jump roping, my wifes suggestion) probably isn't a good idea right away.

The HS track around here is extra soft. I know because I tried skating on it and it was double the effort. :| 🙂

haha it's quite the opposite for me. Biking makes my knees hurt and I get bored. I could run all day though and never get bored 😀

To reduce shock you guys suggest running on the beach?

actually, running on the beach isn't much fun, for you or your legs. If you run in the dry sand, it's very slippery and difficult. If you run on the wet sand, it's very hard and compacted and even harder than a lot of other surfaces. Tracks, grass and dirt trails are the best. Sidewalks are the worst, as concrete is harder than asphalt. It's better to run on the road than the sidewalk.

And yes, swimming is an even better workout than running. Works every muscle in your body pretty much, plus makes your heartrate skyrocket.

isn't walking better in the long run? it doesn't hurt the knees as much and its cardio workout.

a brisk walk burns about as many calories as a slow jog, but if you're just casually walking, it doesn't do anything. And even still, a brisk power walk burns about half as much as a "tempo" run pace, which is a moderately quick run, about 80-90% of your VO2 max. If all you want is cardio, powerwalking might be the way to go, along with biking and blading.

There's absolutely no way you can raise your heart rate walking to the level you'd raise it to while running.
