Is Jaton the only one with a 256MB PCI 6200 these days?

May I ask why you need a 6200 with 256MB of memory? (not a snide comment, I'm curious)

A lot of the low end cards went to hypermemory/turbo-cache for when they need extra memory is why you're having trouble. I would think that you wouldn't have to spend too much more and get a higher end card with that amount of memory for not too much more (say a 6600 or 7600 or the ATi equivalents).

256MB on those kind of Gpu is worthless. Just try using a game situation which calls for 256mb .. it will choke hardcore. For a PCI card, 64mb should be the limit, as the interface itself is already a severe bottleneck. As a matter of fact, a $89 Fry's Pentium D 805 + ECS Via DeltaChrome9 would have MUCH better results than running PCI video. You can use DDR1 or DDR2 memory with it, and plop in a decent AGP card if so desired.

Fwiw, they also made 256mb Radeon 9250, but it's equally wasteful, as loading anywhere near 256mb of textures/data on that card will crush it like an ant.

I have a 7900GTO running @ GTX speeds if I want to game, I'm not worried about that.

I just need something to drive a 3rd monitor, & PCI slots are all I have available (aside from a single 1x PCI-e slot).

The 256 MB requirement is just for Aero @ high resolutions, this will never see a game. With a 128 MB card I'd be limited to driving a single 1600x1200 display, I'd like the option of adding a 4th display.

Hmm, probably smarter to jump to an SLI mobo, and run in non-SLI mode, but with dual PCI-e slots, you can run your 7900GTO for games, etc, and run a dual-dvi-out 7600GT or something for two more speedy Aero-capable displays. I have a hunch a 256mb PCI card would crumble under Aero at high WS resolutions.

Is Aero really that stressful? Any performance data out there for lower end GPU's?

If two high res displays is too much to expect from it I can just be satisfied with three displays for now. I'm not really looking to upgrade anything else any time soon.

I ran it on an Athlon XP 3200+ @ 2.5ghz, with an AGP 256mb FX5950 Ultra , 1.5GB PC2700, 160GB Seagate 7200.9 drive. Clean install, and Aero ran like butt at 1600x1200. At 1280x1024 it was bearable, but noticably unsmooth. At 1024x768 it smoothed out a bit.

The 5950 AGP is leagues faster than any PCI card. I wouldn't expect much. Aero is weirdly inefficient when you actually look at the end result. Doesn't seem like it should run so crappy. Guess it takes mad skillz to make it suck so badly.
