Is "Jap" racist?

What does Jap have to do with Jew ?

And, yes, most Japanese would be offended.

The term was used in a derogative way during WWII.

If "Jew" isn't, I don't see why "Jap" is considered racist. 😕

Actually, depending on the situation, saying 'jew' can offend people as well.

I don't understand it either. But apparently abbreviating country names is extremely offensive, such as beloved patriot and Jap. I guess American should be offensive too, as thats a shortening of the United States of America. And Brits. And Aussies.

All of the above terms have been used in negative fashions, so that argument isn't fully valid.

P.S. I agree beloved patriot is offensive, if your simply calling someone that of Arabian origin. But if they are actually from Pakistan, and you know this, why is it? I don't know.

anyone have a link to that old ww2 era time magazine article that told you the way to identify a dirty jap from nice docile chinese? 🙂 haha

GEESH..... well, thanks for the warning

A friend of mine who's dad is jewish was at a Jewish Deli and called it "Jew food" and the chick sitting in the next table over b1tched him out for using that term.

Jap is just a word. It's all about how the person who is being called "Jap" responds to it. I personally don't see the racism in it, since it's 2003 and not 1944, but hey, that's just me.

Some people find cracker, honkey, redneck, etc racist. I, being a white person, don't. I think that if what someone calls you is your biggest concern, you need to remove your head from your a--.

Once again, that's just me.

If you call someone a jap, yeah. If you say someone is jap, no.

a jap (n.) == offensive
jap (adj.) == relatively inoffensive

Just shorten it more to 'J' .. Jpop, J-spec, etc
That's what you do with Korean.

If you call a British person a Brit, is it offensive?

You're an asshole. It's just a word. If you take offense, you need to get your head out of your ass, bitch.

You have to look at historical references, if Jap was used in a positive affirming manner in the past then there is no negative stigma today.

If you think about it the n word is just that, a word, but the derogatory manner in which it was used in America's past is why we attach such negativity to it.

..... jew is just a derogatory term, but if you take it literally Jewish is a person that belives in Judaism.... if you don't know that go relearn world history.

if i said "stop being gay", would u refer to "gay" as a race? no.

Ah, but you see, there is the difference. Jap is a shortened version of the word Japenese. Like Brit for British or Ruski for Russian. A--hole is inherently a derogitory word, because there is only one meaning to it.

Jap can be used as deogitory, or as a shortened version of Japenese.

OK, so if someone says to someone else "You damn Jap", they should think "I can't take offense, he meant the good definition of Jap. I should get my head out of my ass."
