I look at the h67 the p67 and the z68 and see they are are related with the z68 being a mix of h67 and p67 so whats the story with the cpu?

The cpu i would think is drop in compatible in any of the 3 chipsets no?

I do know this post seems more like a motherboard question but my focus is on how ivy bridge seems to only support z68?

Watching that video that plug in card is what offers pci 3.0 isn't it?

Hope not that thing looks like its offering life support just to include pci 3.0.

Ivy support needs some different hardware on the motherboard as most manufactures just spend enough to do the job (ie: do not get the part that supports PCI-E 3.0).

Ivy is ment to work on the Z68 chipset but then going by wiki intel will also be releasing some new chipsets when Ivy is released as well.

The difference between the h67, p67 and z68 are small, but then that is intel segmenting the market and meeting price points for each.

Going by what Ivy is ment to be, unless you are into overclocking or running your monitor via the integrated GPU, Ivy is not likly to bring you anything worth spending money on a upgrade for from Sandy Bridge.

The latest bios for the P8P67 motherboard says it supports 22nm cpu's. One guess which ones they are.

I believe both P67 and Z68 can support IB, as long as mobo manufacturers release updated BIOS

Officially, all LGA1155 motherboards will be compatible with ivy bridge with a BIOS update except Q65,Q67,B65,HM67,HM65,UM67,QS67,QM67. I haven't even heard of most of those.

Yeah, it's more about BIOS/manufacturer/specific mobo support than just the chipset.
Lots of boards could potentially support IB, but don't assume. Check with the manufacturer first, but most chipset should SUPPORT IB, and only a few won't.

These are all mobile chipsets or chipsets that support vPro...
Most users of these product won't think of upgrading or even can't think of upgrading.
I guess that's why the reason Intel do not allow them to upgrade. Actually these chipsets must potentially have the ability to support IVY.

My mobo already has the bios required for IB, on the fence about getting one though since I'm very satisfied with my current setup.

Some incongruities need clarification . . . by someone . . . sooner or later . . .

I've got the P8Z68-V-Pro. I only glanced at two newer BIOS revisions since I flashed the 606 BIOS. If they support the 22nm IB CPU in socket-1155, the BIOS revision notes should say so -- most likely with the phrase " . . . supports 22nm CPUs . . . " I'll need to review those revision notes to satisfy myself that they'll support a socket-1155 Ivy Bridge processor.

At the same time, the "specifications" statement for the boards released last spring and summer do not show " . . . 22nm . . " -- referring to 32nm Sandy Bridgers.

And also at this time, there is a spate of newer ASUS motherboards -- all tagged with the name-component "Gen3." There is for instance a P8Z68-V-Pro Gen3 board, boasting 22nm Ivy Bridge compatibility. That is, they state " . . . supports 22nm CPUs . . . " or something like that.
