I am staying at a friends place for a few months with no internet/cable etc. So I plug in the laptop, crank up the netstumbler and find 3 wireless networks unsecured that I can use.

Is it unethical to use someones unsecured AP?

No, but it is unethical to hack into someones "secured" network. If someone is dumb enough to leave their wireless lan open to the public, then use it. Just dont be an ass and use bit torrent :p

Use it. I do this whenever I travel. If they don't want people to use their wireless, they should encrypt it.

I just use MAC filters... my network may look unsecured but it denies all but my MAC address.. works very well.

Because MAC addresses can't be spoofed.

Couldn't you spoof the Mac address pretty easily? I am pretty sure WEP doesn't encrypt the layer 2 stuff.

No, IMO.

They are responsible for for securing their network.

Huh? There's no GH conversation going on. Networking maybe, but not GH.

I feel the same way about cars, houses, and girlfriends.

If I left my car running in the street with the keys in it every night, I would hardly be surprised if someone eventually took it.;)

I like it when people don't protect themselves, but carry a lot of cash.

If you are just browsing the internet and things like that, then there's no problem with it. If they wanted you to not use it, they'd put some sort of security on it. If it's open, then obviosuly they don't care.

However if you use it to do illegal things or hack back into the other person's computers or anythign like that, then it's wrong and illegal.

What else would you be doing with someone else's network connection? The whole point is to use it to anonymize yourself when trying to get into another network.

:D hah, and you know it works well because??? People, THIS is why we have a ton of unsecured networks around. It's like saying "I have my own fixed IP address, so no one can haxor me!"
