i was out shopping last night, and the girl that helped me out was amazing, and seemed my type for a long term relationship. I'm afraid if I get to far ahead of myself, I might screw it up or seem to aggressive. I called back up there and asked her out, but she said she just got out of a long term relationship and didn't want to start dating anybody just yet, but that I should try back in a few weeks and she how she feels. I don't know if that was just bs to pass me by, or if she wants to see if I actually care enough to try again later.

Hmmmm. Not sure on that one, seems like a blow off to me, or she's waiting to see if you are truly interested in her. Hard to tell.
it's not "wrong" per se, but it's probably not good to get ahead of yourself. as for her story, i think you should try again. definitely be persistant (but not annoying.)

the feeling I got from her was, look, I just got out of a long term relationship, and it hurt, and I really don't feel like messing with anything that won't get me something better than what I just had. If you are interested enough that we could actually have a long term relationship, then you will give me my time and try back.

Do you shop there often? If so, continue to, but DON'T ask her out for a few weeks. Let her see that you aren't some stalker.
If you don't shop there often, I'd find a reason to go back there in a couple of weeks but again don't ask her out then. Just be friendly, not pushy. "Hey, nice to see you again. How are things going?" Keep it light.
If you can do that, then call her a week or so after your visit and ask her again.
