if your dog dies?

I did today, and I feel bad about it, but the death of my dog hit me harder than most human deaths I have gone through...

It happened so fast I didn't even get to say goodbye to him as I was out of town. Mother and Father in law took him to the vet while the wife and I were out of town because he couldn't go to the bathroom and was whining and making awful noises while trying to go to the bathroom. A tumor had completely closed off his rectum and he was suffering so they put him down on the spot. After 15 years with my wife and 4 years with me our best friend is now gone and I couldn't face going in to work with him on my mind.

:'(

Not sure what to do with myself...

Sorry for your loss. Yes, it is acceptable to call in sick. You are grieving and it makes no sense to be at work. You will likely be distracted and non-productive anyway.

Sorry for your loss. Definitely a reason to miss work. Losing my dog was probably one of the worse things to ever happen to me. RIP :(

I did it. The day we had to put down Odie (was over 16yrs old cocker spaniel mutt), had that dog since I was in grade 5. He was with our family through so much, even if it's just a dog it still becomes a part of your family, which you lost. Totally understandable.

I called in "sick" when my cat crapped herself. (Secretary said, and I quote, "well, it's like a sick kid.")

I think taking a day or two to mourn a dog is fine. But if your boss doesn't own pets and doesn't "get" it, you may need to... well... yeah.

Sorry for your loss. It's completely fine to call in sick. You're mentally sick (grieving). IMO it doesn't even require anything that big, sometimes I'd just wake up in a weird mood and call in. We aren't robots

Sorry for your loss.

In 2010 I put my pet to sleep and I called and told my boss and that I wasn't coming in along with the reason. He had no problem with it.

Yes and no. If you're the type of person to rarely call in sick sure go for it. If you're the type of person who always calls in sick for other petty things (and yes I do think it's petty); then no your an ass and should be shit canned.

Then again if you're the latter it doesn't really matter because your a shit bag anyways. Though since you felt the need to come here I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

There's no reason to troll in a thread like this. -Admin DrPizza

Just echoing what most people said, don't even think about making yourself feel worse for calling in. Do it, take care of yourself.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Yes, it's okay to call out sick for this IMO.
Just make sure that you don't tell your boss that the reason you're calling out is because "old yeller" died or you could be shitcanned.

This is only the second time I have called in sick to this job in 2 years. 2nd time I've called in sick probably in the last 6 years. At my last job my boss sent me home one day because he thought I looked like I was going to die. Turned out I had pneumonia.

I've called in after killing off a few brain cells so a dog should be OK.

This sounds like the reaction of a child. How old are you, really?

Nothing wrong with that. You would have been an emotional wreck all day.

If I felt like shit I'd have done the same.
Just make up some bullshit excuse for the colleagues unless your boss owns pets too.
