It's a grey area really. Some might be appreciative, some might be pissed. I'd be glad if someone did something like that for me if I didn't know what I was doing.

its quite sad actually....

Doing a site survery i can see that 3 of them are still using the SSID: default and still on channel 6 :D

One of the others was nice enough to rename his router, but didnt put on any WEP.

Very true. I'm sure some people have no idea how big of a security hole they're leaving open.

My wireless isn't wep inabled now, but I don't think it matters. No file or print sharing is on either.

Do you have a business card? If so, walk over and tell him that for $50, you'll have his wireless network sealed up in 30 minutes or less. If he says "no" - then, just leave your business card with him. I'm sure you'll get a call back within a couple of hours to accept your services.

I dare you to come through my neighborhood and try trolling my network. 128 bit WEP is enabled. Yeah baby! ;)

Kinda off topic, but how do I properly secure a wireless network.

No one around my parents house are geeks. I am not worried about them stealing their interent, but I think I want to secure it anyways.

Depends on the router. Basic things to do are enable WEP, use MAC address filtering & disable SSID broadcast.

You could start by reading the documentation that came with your product. It should direct you how to enable security protection on your network.

This is actually an interesting topic for me since I know next to nothing about wireless networking. I understand the concept and I know that WEP is Wireless Encryption Protocol (or close to it) but I'ld like to know more about wireless security.

Bump.

I've been using their 11b+ line since the beginning of August. VERY impressed as well. Suposedly D-Link is/was going to be releasing new firmware for their 11b+ line to increase the speed, but haven't seen it yet. :(

I changed the SSID on mine as well as enabling 156bit encryption.. Should be good, plus I am using 802.11a, 72 megabits/sec... Not many people use 802.11a, so thats some security in and of itself.. heh
