Is it worth upgrading to a 120 GB SSD on my laptop?

So recently the 500 GB HDD in my laptop died so i was looking to replace it and then i came across the SSD's available for same price but much much lower capacity.

This is a 4 year old laptop with an i3-3217U (I guess) with 2 x 4 GB (8 GB) DDR3 ram, that i bought when i entered the university back then. Nowadays i just use it to read news/articles and watch some videos and maybe a quick editing of work related files if really needed and not much else. So do you think its worth going to a 120 GB SSD over 500 GB HDD? i dont want to spend too much on this as i already have my i7 8700k gaming rig with GTX 1080 Ti and 2 x 1 TB SSD's.

So yea my work on it is very minimal and limited. The thing is i am a data hog and i tend to gather soo much data over time that i have over 12 TB drives full of data. just backed up. My current gaming rig have around 6 TB Storage and 4 TB offline backup. I am a hobby game modder so there is a lot of data that i often back up and i dont usually uninstall games once installed cause i'll be working on modding multiple games and just leave them there.

The thing is i feel like if i go for the 120 GB SSD i might regret the lack of storage knowing me, but then the thought of having fast boot times and faster accessing times is very enticing. This question might sound too obvious but am only asking to help clear my mind.

One more thing, i have a few old games that i often play with my friends on lan that refuses to boot when on SSD so that's also a reason for backtracking.

Get a 240 gb SSD and yes its very worth it.

Why? Because your'e a data hog. SSD's have a lifespan of how many times you can write, erase, write on them.

If you have more spare room the SSD, it can last technically forever, but a low capacity one which is filled 80% with os/ data only has 20% left which will be used again and again for random data.

Therefore the best thing you can do with an SSD is get some extra room so it lasts longer.

Which OS?

Win 7 x64. Win 10 wont really play nice with old games which is what i mostly play on that laptop during lan parties.

oh yes crap i forget that. Hmm i might end up killing that drive faster than i can imagine.

Not to mention just about every good SSD company has stopped making 120GB because the are too low of performance compared to the larger units (and also because of the NAND module size, and since most use 3D NAND which offers horrible performance once they are filled up like Indus stated). About the only 120GB drive worth getting at this point in time is the Crucial BX300, as they are one of the few drives that use MLC insteand of TLC NAND. With that drive, performance doesn't fall like other drives when it is filled up.

You can easily find a good 500GB version on sale for under a $100, and a 250GB version for around $60 - $70.

Team Group L5 Lite 3D NAND 480GB SATA SSD is $79.99 at Newegg right now! Hurry! (Or not, they had a Mushkin Source 500GB for $89.99 on ShellShocker, now sold out. Seems like prices are trending downwards?)

My take on it is, if you're going to go to the trouble of cloning the OS install, and swapping drives physically, that you might as well "make it count", and especially if you are a "data hog", throw in AT LEAST a 480GB drive, to be comfortable, for the future too, and for longevity.

Heck, I put a 480GB into an N2830 Atom (Bay Trail dual-core) laptop, even. It flies now. Your i3 should really shine with an SSD.

You should get an SSD.

Size/money is up to you but IMO 250gb is minimum.

If you're a data hog but you're comfortable juggling network shares and offline storage then the boot drive capacity of your laptop isn't a big problem.
