Is it worth upgrading my CPU to a 3.4G Prescott Socket 478?

I built my system about a year and a half ago (July 04). All is well but now I am looking into upgrading my CPU to a 3.4 Ghz Prescott Socket 478. Will I see much difference in performance? I am doing some gaming (Doom 3 and Far Cry). I am also doing a lot of Photoshop CS2 and some video editing (Premiere Pro). At the moment, I would rather stick with my original setup as in my sig. I figure though if I could squeeze a bit more of performance with the CPU upgrade, I'd highly consider it. But if it is not worth it, I'll just wait till I do a major upgrade of mobo/CPU/video card.

I would appreciate experienced feedback.

If it was me, there would be no way that I would upgrade from a 3.2 CPU to a 3.4 CPU. Have you tried overclocking that 3.2 at all? You may be able to squeeze a bit more performance out of it. To get to 3.4GHz, you would only need to up the FSB to 212 as long as your mobo and RAM are up to the task.

Thanks JohnAn2112 for the reply. Well that's the issue at hand - the Soyo board is not up to the task in OCing. I tried a bit of OC tweaking and changing the timings but I started to get some random reboots and Doom 3 started to act up and having some mean artifacts. I did get to 3.4 Ghz though for my efforts that was short lived.

I just figured if the Precott CPU has a bit of boost in performance compared to my Northwood CPU, could and would make the swap.

Going from a 3.2 t oa 3.4 isn't going to make any huge differance. It will help slightly with video encoding times. Already have 2GB of ram, so no need to upgrade that either, and one of the best AGP video cards available. Definatly don't need to upgrade, you have a sweet system already. A dual core would help a good bit with video encoding, and photoshop, but the aren't any compatible with your motherboard.

Mahalo for replying Stevty2889. Well then that settles that🙂. Then the only other thing I really would look into changing/upgrading is my case. I am hoping to go with a L Lian to hopefully lower the sound levels, even just a tad.

All the best.

There's no way I'd upgrade from a 3.2 to just a 3.4.

I've got a 3.4C Northwood and it's gonna take a lot for me to upgrade.
I've even bought a nice socket 939 MB. But I'm still having a hard time picking a CPU for it.
