Is it worth upgrading from OCed Tbred@2.3GHz to M-AXP?

I asked the same question a few months ago and the general consensus was no..

So right now I have a 1700+@2.3GHz (1.7v-30C/50C) on my NF7-S and it's holding up pretty well but I think it's getting long in the tooth too! :D

It looks like the price of M-AXPs on Newegg have only dropped about $10-$20 since the last time I looked. I guess for the upgrade to be worthwhile I would like to get around a 2.5GHz OC at preferably lower temps

Should I take the plunge or hold on until Athlon64 gets cheaper?

Well, you've got a good board to hopefully hit 2.4-2.5ghz (assuming you've got RAM that will do 200+ FSB), and you're temps with the mobile chip will probably be ~5C lower.

But if I were in your place, it would be hard for me to justify the extra 100 or 200mhz that you would gain with the mobile. You're already taking advantage of a high FSB, so I really just don't think the mobile is worth it if you're already running at 2.3ghz.

If you're really leaning toward toward a mobile, I'd check out the FS/FT forums. You might be able to get a hold of one that's guaranteed to hit 2.4-2.5ghz, and could probably pick it up cheaper than the new ones are going for at NE.

How much is a 1700+ @ 2.3ghz worth?

Yes I'm scouring FS/FT for a deal but damn you guys are pretty fast :)

I am guessing I should be able to get around $50-$60 for my current chip since it can hit at least 2.4GHz (prime stable) on air on slightly higher voltage. :D I am not running it at 2.4 becase it runs really hot.. but someone on water might be able to take advantage of it.

I'm considering a similar upgrade. I would like 2.5GHz for Doom3. It looks like the D3 engine is fairly CPU dependent so more MHz is what I'm after these days.

Well, Screw, if you can get $50 for your 1700+, and pick up a mobile for $75, then you're really only looking at a $25 investment. For only $25, the exta 200mhz or so you'd gain (hopefully) would be worth it, IMHO.

Good point.

Actually this is what I have in mind :D

No ....you'll see negligable performance improvments by having xtra cache of mobile.. but at a couple happy meals price what you got to loose....you might get lucky and get a 2.7 air chip... so yes and no:):p

I'd say no. You may get a great chip, but you also run the risk of getting a really bad chip, maybe 2.2 or 2.3GHz at high voltages. You'd be a bit better off due to the cache, but you'd be out a lot of time and a bit of money buying, selling, and overclocking. I guess it depends on how much the potential 200-300MHz gain is worth to you. You're probably looking at maybe a 20% increase in performance tops. Personally I'd rather put the money away to save for when PCI Express and A64s have the same price/performance ratio as the current mobiles.

Well put. Thanks a lot :)

I have not factored in the time and effort to find that sweet spot which would take many, many days of priming. I guess my next upgrade would be an A64!
