Is it worth upgrading from a 9600GT yet?

The rest of my computer is fine I think - e8400, 8GB RAM. Slowest part at the moment is probably the 9600GT.

I game at 1920x1200, and though the 9600 can handle most games at that res just fine, there's a few where it clearly struggles (hell, even parts of WoW dip to 30 FPS).

So, is there a compelling reason to upgrade to a new card yet? If so, which? Or would I be better off waiting for something else?

Just wait, the 9600GT is close to the 8800GT which in turn is close to the HD 4850 which is not that much slower from the HD 4870 which is only a bit slower than the GTX 280.

Sure when you add all the steps the performance difference is significant (maybe 30-50%) but not significant ENOUGH.

Wait for a new gen of cards, your 9600GT can still serve you well, or get a cheap 9600GT for SLI to hold you in the meantime.

The only reason I'm migrating from my 8800GT is because I want to put that in my Mac Pro and I need a new card for my gaming PC :p

At 19*12 I might think about getting an HD4850 from my 9600GT but I game @ 16*10, however the SLI option would definitely appeal, just make sure your PCIe pipes are true 16x16 if you get an SLI mobo. I may just do that myself, but going from the Intel chipset to the 750i isn't appealing to me stability wise so I think I will stick with the mobo I have and just upgrade to the 4870/NV equivalent (or whatever they have out at the time) later - the 9600GT is serving me well so far for the price I paid for it.

enzoLT. i am at the same spot. and I am going to go corssfire when the twin of my card is less than 100 bucks. because, while it might not be cutting edge forever, I think that kinda power, will suit me for a long long time.

Depends on what you play.. if it plays everything you own fine then why upgrade?

Also, a new card most likely won't help for WoW. WoW is not GPU intensive at all; if it dips
to 30 fps on your machine I would assume it would do that on any.

He says it clearly struggles in a few. i would assume a 9600gt would struggle at that high res esp with AA/AF on.

i'd suggest getting a 4870. this suggestion is emphasized even more if you have an Intel chipset motherboard.

yeah, if you really really need to, then go for those two in one solutions, but if WoW is really the only game you play, then you could save yourself some cash. wait until the 4870x2 drops and prices should drop a bit as well
