Is it worth trying to buy appliances online?

With the woman and I buying a new house (we close at the end of the month), we'll be picking up a couple of appliances, something which I've purchased before. We'll for sure be picking up a dishwasher, and possibly a refrigerator. Now I know that just about everything else is cheaper online, but does this apply to appliances as well? Can I save money even after shipping/delivery? If so, where would one go to find good deals?

on some bigger items, i imagine you'd get screwed with shipping. you might want to check out factory outlet dealers as well, they usually have some great deals.

I did a lot of research into this earlier this year. After delivery and installation, you'll end up paying about the same as if you buy from a local place.
http://www.ajmadison.com/ is one of the more reputable on-line appliance stores, and I was able to beat their prices by more than 15% with free delivery (had to pay for installation because of some major changes) but still saved quite a bit over buying on-line. Remember, non-chain stores can & often will dicker on price, rather than see you go to Sears, Home Depot, Lowes, etc...PLUS, you're supporting a LOCAL business rather than another large corporation.
