Is it worth to keep?

I got a pass-down ibm t60 from my son. It was in good condition. I made a mistake thinking a ssd is easy to be installed before realising that the bios has to be modified for the ssd to work. That where the problem began. The former owner (we bought this used 5 years ago) forgot to tell us about the password to access the bios. We tried to bypass it with instructions from you tube clips and now it's locked. My question is: Is it worth to send it to lenovo for repair or just dump it. I'm retired and a newbie to today technology.
Your thoughts are appreciated

The T60 is a solid notebook - IBM/Lenovo. I have one running Win 7 as a backup system. It does not have native AHCI mode in the BIOS, and perhaps that is the issue you are referring to. It is very secure when it comes to the BIOS password - something I never use. The only fix I know for it is to send it in to the nearest maintenance facility.

You can use it w/o a SSD - and a hybrid HDD is pretty snappy. Otherwise, it's your choice.

Thanks for your reply. Yes the ibm-thinkpad is solid. That's the reason i planned to put the ssd in to give it a new life (good enough for me to learn new things) My son dropped it few times (cracked plastic) and it still worked fine before we tampered with the bios password. If we knew the t60 has no AHCI feature we would not tamper with the cmos chip. Now it's locked, Before the bios incident it worked fine. I haven't contacted lenovo service, just curious to know approximately how much it would cost to have it fixed.
