Is it Worth the upgrade from i7 920 -> 3570k for these games I play?

    Hello,

    Here's the existing system:

    i7 920 @ 3.6ghz DH14 HSF
    12gb ram
    680 GTX
    27" @ 2560*1440
    ssd's

    Games I play religiously:

SC2 (80% of my time on this, pretty serious about competitive in this)
    WoW
    GW2 (when it comes out)
    TERA

Games that are pretty much one and done:

    Arkham city
    Darksiders 2
    Max Payne 3
    Deus Ex: Revo
    Skyrim
    Witcher 2

I'm trying to justify the upgrade from the 920 to the 3570k. Things are already running pretty smoothly at that res with my current setup. Can anyone convince me to buy or not buy the new parts?

    Thanks in advance!

Since you overclock as you do, I would wait for Haswell in march.

Had it been a stock 920 I would say sure, but since its OCed I say wait.

Just dont buy, at 2560x1440 you are 99% GPU limited

so even with a 680 i'm still limited by the gpu at that res? I wouldn't have thought of that! Thanks for the advice.
I guess unless i'm stepping up to a 39 series or something and mad oc'ing it, it's probably not worth it in the long run.

To find out, just OC the CPU to 4GHz (from 3.6GHz) and see if you will get any performance gains in games. If not, 99% you will not get anything upgrading to the 3570K.

I would have to say that based on the fact that you have overclocked the Intel® Core™ i7-920 to 3.6GHz that you wouldnt see much of a performance increase by moving to the Intel Core i5-3570K at this time.

Ok, you guys have convinced me not to get the 3570k. I'm gonna wait till the games that I play are no longer running at a convincing, comfortable fps with all the eye candy turned on!

You all just saved me a couple hunnerd bucks!

    Thanks again!

you still have a little bit of headroom on your 920. 1.35v should get you 4Ghz.

You may notice a marginal improvement in a few games, but not enough to make it a worthwhile upgrade IMO.
