Is it worth switching my e-mail?

What are the benefits of having another email such Lavabit or Hushmail as opposed to the popular Gmail or hotmail or Yahoo/

I have a Gmail and everything I have is on my gmail account, I love the ability to being able to login to YouTube as well using my gmail without creating an account.

I also like the ease of adding / maintaining contact lists

I never see ads in Gmail since I turned those off

is there any compelling reason for me to switch?

Also, do you recommend I switch to this Lavabit and pay or get a free email from my Host (Host Gator)?

I don't usually receive any sensitive info over email just the usual stuff

How much do you value your privacy? What will happen when your government demands your data from Google, or whatever "free" service you choose?

One downside to gmail is if they ban your youtube account (such as for copyright violations) you can't access your mail until you reset the password, which involves giving your phone number to google so they can send you a text message to reset the password. And I don't see any reason why they couldn't just nullify your gmail account for a youtube (or some other google service) infraction if that's what they decided.

I use Office365 and love it. Prefer it over gmail but mainly because I'm an Exchange admin and like Outlook and OWA. Outlook never ran well with gmail.. seemed to always get timeouts.

Depends, is the gmail account in addition to an account offered by your ISP?

If your ISP does not offer such a thing, I would have a second email account through another service just as a backup.

my ISP does offer an email but I never use them because I dont trust them and I may switch ISPs soon so I dont want to go through the hassle of switching emails to another ISP again.

I guess ill make another email as a backup and keep all my registrations and stuff tied to my Gmail

thanks for the advice guys

PS: is my iCloud email that Apple gave me secure or it's the same crap as Gmail?
