is it worth purchasing a GF4 4200 8X AGP still?

Just wanted to post a thread about this. It seems that these video cards can now be had in between $100 - $150 a pop. Does anyone think this is still worth purchasing considering you can get the Ti4600 for about $50 more?

For nvidia you might get a 4800se instead, they're priced and perform in between 4200 and 4600, and slaughter the craptastic fx 5200 in non-AA modes.

Read the 9600 pro reviews on the Anandtech and Toms sites to see why the 9500 pro (not 9600) is currently the best midrange card though, for $177 at newegg (Saphire brand).

yeah 128mb, dx9, the r300 core gets it done.

i bought a 9500 non pro for $150 a few months ago, and soft9700'd it. my card is slightly faster then a 9500pro, but the 9500pro can be overclocked.

if i was building another rig, i would get a 9500pro🙂

Here is my take.

Is it worth buying the 4200?

Take my comparison between graphic cards and sports cars. This could be a stretch.

You need to get a car to kick the crap out of your friends Ford Stratus. Would you buy the Corvette for 80 grand or the faster twin turbo Porsche for 120 grand? Will both these cars get the job done? Sure. So why buy the more expensive car? Bragging rights of course.

Sure, there are cards faster then the ti 4200 and the 9500 pro, faster benchmarks of course. You see a difference in numbers, but do you see a noticeable difference in the actual display? Barely. I can see if you do some really intense graphical stuff you may need a 9700 pro or 9800 pro even. However a geforce 4200 will display games like splinter cell, unreal 2, and others fantastically on your monitor.

depends on what you want and how much you want to spend. Here in Australia, 9500 pro cards are much more expensive that ti4200 so i picked up the latter and am very happy with it. 😉

when you play at 1600x1200 it matters trust me

😀

need the latest and greatest to play on my 2000FP 20" LCD 🙂

I have a 4200 ti 128mb from MSI, I bought back in November, it has performed great for me at resolutions up to 1280x1024, UT2003 looks great and the new game Pro Race Driver looks awesome, but you can get better cards that are below 200 and I think I would go that route, but if you can find a 4200 below 100, then go for it if you don't want to spend any more money.
