Is it worth over clocking this rig?

Ok guys I just got my new rig and it is going to see alot of gaming, video editing and photoshop work... i have never overclocked before but was just wondering if it is worth it with what i have. My set up is..

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ - Standard HSF
Standard 360W PSU (Came in a Asus case)
GIGABYTE ATI RADEON X800XL, 512MB,
GeIL High Performance Dual Channel 2x1G DDR400 HeatSpreader Hand Picked and Optimised
Western Digital Caviar 7200RPM ATA100 200Gb 8M cache
Gigabyte GA-K8NXP-SLI S939

What do you think I should do?

Dont overclock if you dont know what you're doing 😉

GET A NEW POWER SUPPLY!!! omg, you have a peice of crap. i dont know what your budget for a new one, but if you post it i can recommend something.

Get a Antec NeoPower around $80 bucks if you look around, i have what some people would say a "sub par" PSU ( Ultra X- Connect 500w ) , but i have read mixed reviews and it works fine for me, but i prolly will within a few months get a OCZ Modsteam

Antec, OCZ, and PC Power & Cooling all work well. PC Power & Cooling is considered the elite (and charge accordingly).

DO NOT get a modular power supply. Based on my experience and subsequent research on the Web, the Ultra XCOnnects are crap. One blew up on me three days after I installed it and it fried my motherboard (though not my CPU, thank GOD.) Most PS makers won't make modulars because it's much harder to get steady, consistent voltage on the rails.

The rest of your system looks more than fine....

Ok i have some options here who wants to tell me which is best to purchase.

Antec NeoPower 480 480W ATX power supply, Advanced Cable Management $189
Antec SmartPower 2.0 500W ATX Power Supply, with Advanced Cable Management $115
Antec TruePower 2.0 550W ATX Power Supply, Noise Level 21dBA $165
OCZ MODSTREAM POWER SUPPLY 450W EZMOD A&BTX/ PCIE/ SATA $169
Zalman ZM400B-APS 400W Noiseless ATX12V Power Supply, supports Intel P4 and AMD CPUs $115

What do you think?

Note all prices are australian dollars..

Seasonic 500 or 600 (600 is what I have)S12 for around 135 (for the 600watt version). Very efficient at around 80% with two PCI-ex power cords and a lot of SATA connections. I like it myself for my dualcore overclocked system.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817104155 Make sure to get at least the 520W OCZ if you do go that route. If you plan on going SLI in the future you may want the OCZ Powerstream 520W or the 600W. I have had the 520W Modstream for two months now and I would recommend it. It is modular and that helps the job of wiring your case that much cleaner.

BS...you do need a descent power supply but you don't ahve to spend that much money to accomplish a descent overclock. With the money people spend on overclocking hardware you might as well as buy the better processor. I have a 3800x2 with a toledo core and im up to 2.57ghz at default voltage and im using a thermaltake 480W power supply which is a LOT cheaper than people spend on the 100+ power supplies (about $50).. Don't let these people kid you that you need this 1000W power supply that is $5000 to get a descent overclock cause you don't. I have never spend the money to get this ULTRA hardware that lot of people buy around here yet i get descent OC every time. For example i have geil value ram. Yes i might not get as good as timing as other people...but is it worth the cost...i think not.

It's pretty easy to get 4800+ (stock) speeds out of the 4400+, and have it run cool to boot. But I agree with whoever said don't do it until you feel you know enough. You need to be steeled for some unstable behavior. As long as you know how to recover and tune there's no cause for panic, but the first time your machine bsod's loading Windows, or freezes on POST, will definitely make you gulp. 🙂
