Is this info before or after we found out about Kaby Lake-X? I mean, for those currently on the consumer 1151 platform (Z170), what motivation is there to move to the "-X" platform, for KBL-X and SKL-X, if there will also be unlocked KBL on the regular consumer platform?
Simple. Not everyone will want to move to the X platform, and it costs Intel literally nothing to unlock the multiplier on some chips but it results in a very real increase in revenue. Why not sell a product for which there is demand?
I guess, to my thinking, if Intel really wanted to move "enthusiasts" to the "-X" platform, then they would only release locked KBL on 1151. But maybe I am being a bit too pessimistic towards Intel.
Probably too pessimistic, IMO.
