Is it worth me buying a new GPU? Or should I just start a brand new build?

I am wondering if it is worth me buying a new GPU (thinking about Nvidia GTX 970) or should I just start saving for a brand new build as the other components are pretty old? Will my current setup be able to make the most of a GTX 970 for gaming?

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H55M-UD2H
CPU: i7 875k overclocked to 4ghz
RAM: 16GB DDR3 1600mhz

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your system is actually solid, 875K @ 4GHz isn't a slouch. A GTX 970 would be a solid pairing with that system for sure.

I would wait for the new 14/16nm cards that will start to be released in 2-3 months first.

Wouldn't the next gen cards be limited by the other components?

If you mean by your CPU i dont thing so, latest games are very GPU bound and you can also upscale to 1440p using VSR or DSR.

Also DX-12 Games will make your CPU feel young again ;)

Great! I'm going to wait until summer to see if the new cards get an official release date, then I can get one and upgrade the rest at a later date.

Thanks for all the help!

I'd say your set with that CPU at that frequency. What kind of games do you like to play?

I really like space sims. Last game I played was X3 Terran Conflict (litcubes universe) but that was before I upgraded my CPU. I had a G9650 @ 4.2ghz before the i7 and it couldn't handle large battles in that game. Not sure if it was the CPU or GPU that couldn't handle it. Maybe both.

Looking forward to trying Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen when it comes out.

Also love Football Manager but I'm having a few years away from that game because it's too addictive lol

Nice dude me too! I've been playing the alpha and beta of Star Citizen for a while now myself. Well from what benchmarks I found either an AMD 290x, 390, or 390x or an Nvidia 970 would suit you well. Whichever you can get for the best price is what I would suggest
