Is it worth making friends with the other characters in GTA4?

Just curious...im not too far into the game so no spoilers please; that being said, is it worth being friends with people?

They give you certain bonuses if you make friends with them. Roman will give you the ability to call a taxi once you're friends with him.

Yes, they all have little perks you have access to if they like you enough. Later in the game you date these 2 girls, and one can heal you and the other can drop your wanted level over the phone. Worth it IMO.

Losing your wanted level helped me out a few times. I never used Roman's taxi service, I just hailed a cab and paid. Much faster, and by the end of the game you have so much money you can't possibly spend it all.

The girlfriends are a waste of time. You can easily lose your wanted level or buy some food.

Actually it wastes time cause you have to wait for the guy to show up, whereas just getting a yellow cab is much faster. It saves you money but after awhile you have so much money that it doesnt even matter.

It wasn't worth the trouble in my opinion. Later in the game when you have a bunch of friends and girlfriends they will call you so often it makes it nearly impossible to progress with the main storyline.

Nah, I barely wanted to have that first girlfriend and Roman. It's annoying.

I thought that if you got arrested while dating Kiki you don't lose your weapons. Or am I confusing GTA4 with san andreas... Also I believe Packie has some weapons available to you if you keep his approval of you high enough.

Brucie : Helicopter pickup
Dwanye : Gang backup
The other annoying GF : Health

heh, I always ended up taking Dwayne out because he was always so depressed. I used the gang backup once, had to redo the mission for some reason, tried to call them up again and they said they were busy. WTF! Never used them again, and figured if he blew his brains out who gives a f.
