is it worth it?

with all the rumors of the new gen consoles, is it worth the money to buy and new graphics card.

I need a new card because im running on intels gma 900 onboard video and was looking at a x800xl or a x850ptxe

is it worth it if the new consoles are going to take over gaming computers

New consoles are not going to take over computers. The original xbox was better than any pc at the time it came out, and pc's soon overtook it. Plus, many games are pc only. I would still say it's not worth it though, because new graphics cards are coming out soon.

Uhhh... no. In 2001 a 733MHz celeron, 64mb ram, and a GeForce 2.5 wasnt really "kick ass"

no get x800xl. forget x850xt its a waste by the way what is the rest of ur computers specs and what games do you play.

specs:
asus p5gdc-v deluxe
1 gb of patroit memory
160 gb hard drive sata
intel gma 900 onboard graphics(currently)
intel 2.8 ghz cpu
500W pow max (about to be a antec smart power 2.0 500W)

i want to play all the new games,
half life 2
halo (2 if it comes for computer)
far cry
etc

i dont care about high frame rates just as long as it looks good

Do you have an AGP or PCIE slot?
What sort of games do you play, or would play if you had the hardware?
What CPU/MoBo/RAM do you have? (there's no point putting an X800 with a 1.6GHz processor).

EDIT: That's a P4(775) with PCI-E, isn't it?
If it is PCI-E, you might be better off waiting a little while until the next generation graphics cards come out. Otherwise, anything from a 6600/X700 should let you play those games fine, although you wont be playing at 1600x1200 without something like an X800 or 6800.

and at the time only the geforce 3 was out -- the geforce 4 was out 3 months or so later though

not sure if the same thing is going to happen this time around though, according to AT articles, the wait may be longer than 3 months

^ It never ceases to amaze me how many fools there are. PC gaming will always be superior to consoles.

Well, the big thing for me is online gaming. You're probably not going to play a game's single player for a really long time, so longevity is based on the multiplayer. I don't really know about the new consoles, but as of now, consoles don't allow for nearly the experience that PCs do for multiplayer. I also believe you have to pay monthly for Xbox live? Anyways, PCs for me.

Thats stupid. Xbox360 isn't even out for another 6 months and the PS3 for another year. You don't think PC's will be able to keep up? and after those two consoles are out at those specs for a few years PC's will continue to advance and we'll have to wait for the next consoles to be released.
