Is it worth it ?

I've got a dually HP Netserver 500mhz box crunching about 4 SETI WU's a day 2 at a time. I was wondering if it was worth the electricity expenditure given the pitifully slow output. I don't have anything else in particular for this box to do but SETI so it's kinda hard justifying keeping it running. Then again, it would just sit and collect dust if it wasn't crunching. Decisions decisions. 🙁

Who pays the electric bill? If you do, calculate how much you'd save if you sold the HP netserver, took the money from that plus what you'd save in electricity boxes, and built a more powerful and modern cruncher that uses much less electricity. 🙂

I'm all for squeezing every ounce out of your fleet but if you are paying the power bill then I'd say shut it down. It's not worth the $$$ or wasted energy to produce so little. The $$$ : WU ratio is just too low.

Is it worth it? Hehe.. I've got a Celeron 433 doing slightly higher than 1 WU/day. 😕

The only reason I've got it running is that it's a Single Board Computer in a 2u rackmount case that I paid a total of $35.00 for. :Q 😀 It's not terribly fast, but at the moment I don't have anything better for it to do, so why not? 😉

EDIT: I should add that all the rest of my rigs are XP2000s or better, so I can afford to keep this one little ah heck churning for the heck of it.

I agree with J. in this case, sell it and upgrade whatever you have or build a new powerful system.

My XP2400 doesn't do much better than 4 WUs a day 🙁

Then theres something wrong with it. My 1800+ does 8-9 WUs in 24h...

Thinking about it....I think the figure was closer to 6 or 7 (about 3½ hours per WU) - I got confused, its early and I haven't finished my coffee yet 😱

umm, is that 4 a day on each processor? or 4 a day total. up until the power supply blew on my 933P3 box it was hitting 7-8 WU's a day by itself. (Paul is sending me a power supply to get it up and running again, Thanks again man.)

7-8 on a PIII 933Mhz????? That could not be running on default speed!
That's 3hrs/wu. Even my PIV 2.0Ghz almost has trouble with that speed..
And it's just as fast as Mardeth's XP1800?
That's Fast!!!

By the way, that's 4wu's a day total for that HP.. Just as fast as my Dual Celeron 583Mhz 🙂

well with what I have now that the 933 is dead is around 20-21 per day, before the power supply fried on my 933 box I was getting 27-29 a day(it may be closer to 6-7 per day depending on the ar's it's crunching). it's using pc2100(on some rare ecs mobo that has both pc133 and ddr266) are you running the cli client or the gui client? that might be part of the slowness.

I think you've made a typo somewhere😉 ,I had a PIII 933@1015MHz (VIA chipset) which did av WUs in about 6.25hrs,even on a BX chipset it wouldn't be much less than 6hrs/WU ,4WUs/day.

I'd say its your call ,do you need to cut back the leccy bill?
Maybe you could just keep it running until the end of S@H1? ,afterall we need to do everything we can to hold BBR off😉

I'm sorry, I don't know if we're talking about the same project 😀
20-21 a day?? :Q cool! (if it aint a typo, how much for that machine???😉)

No serious, if it's 6 or 7 than it's still a nice cruncher!
I use the Cli ofcourse, but my system is a compaq, and it's not that fast..
I should have made my own system...

Doomer, I like jliechty's tip on changing the system, 4/day isn't that much for such a big system..

Don't think I'd have much luck selling it as it's somewhat dated. It is, however, in perfect condition and solid as a rock.

After thinking about it I decided to keep it running. Cool weather is coming and the money I'll save not having to run the AC as much should cover the cost of running this behemoth and then some. It's running Win2k AS and will pretty much run as long as it's getting power. I don't even have a monitor hooked up to it. I use TS to keep tabs on it. 🙂

btw: I'm running 2 instances of the cli client.

My immediate goal is to hit 5 grand. I'll be running 4 boxes 24/7 until I reach it. Then I'll scale back to running them only during the day.

I figure it'll take me 250 years to reach 100 grand.
