Is It Worth It to Wait for Nehalem?

I'm thinking about buying a desktop soon with most likely a Penryn. I think I remember hearing that the jump from the Core architecture to the Nehalem architecture will be even greater than the jump from Netburst to Core. I don't mind waiting til the end of this year to buy a computer so do you guys think it is worth it to wait for Nehalem?

Best I can say is, do you need faster performance now? If not, wait. If so, go for it now because you can play the waiting game forever and always buy a better product in the future anyway. If you want to do whatever it is you do faster now, then upgrade/build now. '

You'll be able to get a 8-core CPU for less than a dual-core Allendale. Just wait a while.

I may be wrong , but I think the price of the new stuff will go up significately. If you can wait and have the budget to be able to buy, I'd wait it out. I really can't see needing 8 cores but..........

I'd say buy now! You can upgrade to nahelem at a later date. And yes i do believe the prices will go up, then back down when new tech comes out.. Kinda like the 8800gt did. I only say that because im selling my e8400/8800gt gaming rig in sig... heheh. *PLUG* (check the for sale forums)

wolfdale came out 2 weeks ago or so... nehalem comes out in a YEAR.

You should upgrade to a penryn processor (wolfdale) TODAY, and upgrade from it to nehalem in a year.

My point was that current nehalem is 2009 tech... new tech just came out, so asking "should I wait for next gen" a year before its out is superflous.

Your right... i appologize... i thought he went quadcore when he was talking about neha. Forgot there will be dualcore neha..

uhhh... no.... im not always pro quad.

I got a wolfdale.... waiting for it to come and then sending it to a member on XS to HACK the IHS off.

Then im gonna put it under a chiller with a D-tek fusion using the smallest nozzle possible and see how far this chip will go before it dies.

oh, but if you DO need a quad core, wait a month or two for the penryn based quads to arrive in force. The current quad cores are using 2007 tech.
They are expected to get a 2008 refresh in about a month... and Nehalem versions of both will arrive in 2009...

Nehalems will be using a differect socket type though since the architecture is so different compared to our current quad/dual cores. I'm waiting till Q4 of 09 to get a new mobo and nehalem cpu, so this system I have needs to hold me off for 2 years, hence the 780i so I can use a mess of GF9 cards as they come out

also the boards will most likely not take DDR2, so you need DDR3 ram.

So most likely you'd have to replace almost all your hardware.

Depends on how bad you need the a new system. I really wanted to upgrade to a Penryn system, thinking I would need the upgrade for some new games and it would be worth it. But once I got the games I realized the games ran fine on my current system at the resolution/details I played them on, so it wasn't really necessary to upgrade just yet aside from peace of mind. Despite how old my system is, I think a $400 upgrade (maybe $300 if I sell off some old parts) still wouldn't be worth it.
