Is it worth it to upgrade your parts when buying Dell?

Is it worth it to get one DIMM of 512MB for $200 extra or just 256MB? Probably not.

But in cases like.. Modular DVD+/-RW for $100 more... is that worth it? (I think yes?)
What about 40GB->60GB for $40? (I think so.)
4 Cell -> 8 Cell battery for $60 more? (Yes?)

What about the Dell warranty? I was thinking of getting at least 2 years of warr/service for $100 more.

Can you guys help me out... is it worth it?

I bought my 6000 with the $750 coupon and had to get a bunch of upgrades to qualify for the coupon. Otherwise I'd have less laptop for more money. If you are not buying with a coupon then it may be cheaper to buy them yourself.

Actually I'm waiting for the next coupon to come into effect, I want a $750 off 1500 coupon.

Thing is, if I can get upgrades cheaper, I'd rather extend the warranty.

Which upgrades are worth it?

Memory definitely is not worth it.
Hard drive sometimes is. Look at current market prices for separate 2.5" drives.
Batteries are always worth it.
Optical drives are always worth it; only except is if it is a modular drive that can be removed. You might be able to find an upgraded model for sale at an online store, but IMO its not worth the hassle.

I bought the NEC Dual layer slim drive from newegg for around 100$. I had to remove the casing from the Dell drive that came with my latitude D600 and transfer it to the new drive. I was lucky enough to find the old faceplate fit, but it's probably would have been a lot of trouble if it didn't. I actually bought the drive and a slim USB/Firewire external case for it because I didn't think it would actually fit, but it did. It might not fit your's exactly though. memory is pretty accessible and easy to swap, so look at the prices in dell and elsewhere. Batteries usually do not have a big enough price difference, so Buy that from dell.

Thanks! This was exactly what I'm looking for.

Good thing cos I almsot wanted to upgrade the memory, but otherwise I was pretty dead on.

Where usually is a good deal for 2.5" HDDs? I mean 20GB more for $40 isn't that bad I guess right?

They make pretty good notebooks for the money. Their coupons are the best.
For the money, SOME Dell's are hard to beat. I'm still hard pressed to see myself buying one tho 😉 Good luck!

the 750 off 1500 was a blanket coupon for all inspiron notebooks at dell home so basically you could pick any one u want and config it anyway you wanted and as long as it cost over 1500 u could apply the 750 off.

I wasn't talking about the ones they got now, it was the one from this thread.

For the $$750 off $1499 coupon I would get the RAM upgrade to 512MB for $50, the 128MB video, 9 cell battery and DVD-RW. I think that is enough to bring it to $1499. maybe the HD too since I wouldn't want to change out too many parts and risk voiding the warranty. I have the 9 cell on my 6000 and it lasts for 6 hours of use

Really? I thought you could get at least another 512stick for $50. Why would you pay $50 for one stick of 256MB?

I've seen a lot of people go the way of choosing just the 256mb ram, then buy 1 gig on their own for a total of 1.25gb ram.

I think the extra year of warranty is worth it.
