Is it worth it to upgrade to WinME?

Is it worth it to upgrade from Win98 First Edition to WinME? I mainly use my system for games and the internet.

TIA, Micron

I would have to go with a no to your question. While a few may disagree, I as well as most of the people on this forum would highly advise against "upgrading" to ME. It isn't really an upgrade at all- more of a downgrade if anything

If you do want to upgrade though, you might wanna try checking out Win98 Second edition.... not that much of an improvement, but better nonetheless

Stay clear of ME, thats my advice for anyone.
ME by far the worst piece of crap to come from Redmond(And yes I was around during the old days of Win 1.x, 2.x and 3.x, I just never used them for the same reason Im not using WinME).

Win2K would be good unless you're very fond of old DOS games, or the few games that specifically requires 9x.

Unless you have a clean hard drive and want to mess with it, don't do it. It is not worth wiping out your hard drive for and from what I have read, an upgrade install is hazardous.

I recently installed it on a machine I built for a friend who basically uses the box for AOL (yuck🙁). The mobo was VIA based and I wanted to ensure the install had the chipset drivers, not to mention the winmodem. This was the main reason, plus I wanted to play with it. I will say this, with a clean hard drive, this machine booted unbelievably fast. I was shocked, I am talking post bios about 5 seconds.

Too many issues though if you are a gamer or hardware junkie.

Agreed. I found Win98 1st ed rather unstable, but as long as your computer is ok where you are just stay with it. Win98SE is better than 1stEd, and ALOT better than WinME...like Sunner said, Win2000 is good if you don't need DOS support (just make sure all your hardware has Win2k drivers, it all should Win2k is just NT5, but my ATi TV-Wonder didn't and made my Win2000 experience unpleasant at first).
Honestly if I were you, I'd just wait. Whistler should be coming within a year, and they have a Personal edition specifically targetted as an upgrade from Win95/98/ME. Whislter is based on Windows NT so it will be a big step up from Win9x.
Unless you are having specific problems with Win98, stay where you are.

I love WinME. Call me crazy, but a couple of months ago I reformatted my hard drive, and put on Win98SE, and chose not to put on WinME. Well, after a couple of days, I wanted it back because of some of the little stuff it offers, like the movie maker, which I sometimes use, the restore feature, which comes in handy, the move to and copy to buttons in windows explorer, the built-in features to take out things in the start menu without having to download a third party program, and a lot of stuff. I say put it in, it's great!

WinME is a pile of garbage.
Win98SE much better.

Whistler personal edition is really good!
Unless you need DOS support again.

cheers

Save your money for Windows 2000 - that's a real upgrade - and skip ME. And don't buy the upgrade version of Win 2000, buy the full version.

what's wrong with the upgrade version of Win2000?
How is it different? Doesn't it just ask to insert a valid version CD when you install fresh?

I too, LOVE WinME. My (cable) download speeds increased an honest 25%, it's more stable than any other Windows OS, and I have no issues with it whatsoever.

I'm stupified as to the complete different experiences people have with it. Some people have all sorts of problems, while others (such as me) think it's great. I don't get it.

Be sure to do a complete clean install, if you decide to go with WinME.

Unless you have more money than you know what to do with, it most definately IS NOT worth it's price. Windows 2000 is a far more stable OS, but as said does have a few hardware & software issues, mostly with older stuff. Windows ME also has similar problems, but is nowhere near as stable. I've got a ME/2k dual boot going since Monday night, and I think ME is going to be removed very soon.
Don't waste your money on ME. Better off buying 2000 or just getting some new hardware and waiting for the next generation from MS.
BTW, contrary to some comments here, I had better stability when I upgraded 98SE to ME, than with a clean install of ME. I seem to be alone in that aspect though.

DONT GO WINME!!!! I HATE IT! Ever since I went ME I have gotten more gray hairs. Games crash, BSOD just shutting down, CD burner doesnt finish a burn, Doesnt recognize my DLT drive. The list goes on and on. Stick with win98se or w2k. Trust me, youll feel better in the morning.

As you can see from the Members remarks here stay away from WinME,btw I also have Win98 OS1,mine is rock stable,if you want WinME wait until Microsoft bring out their next version of WinME SE or whatever it will be called hopefully by then most of the bugs will be gone plus there should be better driver support for it.

🙂

WINDOWS ME ROCKS!!!! It hasnt frozen up in 2 months w00t! 40second bootup instead of 1:10 w00t! Ive had no problems at all with this os since having it 2 months. Windows 98 is suck.

I too have to say it: Stay away from WinME.

I've seen one PC running ME (upgraded from Win98 SE) and it was one huge nightmare. And like that isn't enough, you'll have to hack the whole OS in order to give it the same functions as Win98 (access to DOS, a real Control Panel etc.).

Win98 SE or Win2k, that's the question 🙂
