Is it worth it to upgrade from PC133 to PC2100 RAM for my ATHLON 1.4?

FOlks...I have a quick question....I have the K7S5A motherboard and a 1.4 Athlon chip with a new Gainward GForce 4 4200 64meg card and wanted to know if it is worth it for me to upgrade my system memory from 256 megs PC133 to 256 megs of PC2100 ( or higher PC2600 ram....is there such a thing? )

I'm running WIndows XP Pro.....would you do this upgrade or would you just add another 256 of PC133 to total your PC to 512 megs of Ram?

Im wondering if switching from 256 megs of PC133 to PC2100 or higher would yield much of a performance difference if any?

What's the best route to go here?

thanks all!

In my opinion. NO.

I've got a K7S5A with a XP1600 (1.4) and I've had 512mb PC133 (generic) and 512mb PC2100 (crucial) and I only noticed a "small" increase in framerates and 3dmark. maybe about 5% (maybe 10% in some cases) I think you'd be alot better off with Another pc133 stick considering how cheap it is, compared to GOOD DDR.

I'm not upgrading for a while. I almost bought an AT7 but man I really like my setup and the longer I can wait the better my savings gets! Making my next big upgrade cheaper.

This is sort of a seperate question...but since this Motherboard which has been surprisingly efficient for me considering the cheap price of only about $60 or so that I paid for it.......I havent really been following up on all the new features of all the new motherboards out there now

Are the newer motherboards even worth considering for my 1.4 Athlon?...I mean what would these more expensive newer chipsets and boards give me other than a much higher purchase price??

And finally, is the 1.4 Athlon overclockable in any way with this motherboard...K7S5A?

Probably not an advantage for you if it is just to be a "swap" of one type to another. You can check out this thread for some discussion on the same subject.

No, ddr 2100 won't give you a noticeable boost, but neither will another stick of pc133.

Your next mobo will definitely require ddr of some kind, so more pc133 is also a waste of money.

Best save your money and wait to do a mobo/cpu/ram upgrade all at once.

You can get an o/c bios and clock to 138 fsb, but the gain isn't worth the trouble.

If your system is stable, just wait for the big upgrade.

I was using XP pro w/256 Crucial PC133, and things felt sluggish. Picked up 128MB matching stick (Ebay $21 shipped, think Crucial now only charges $25 shipped for 128 and $50 for 256) ) for total of 384, and performance seems up.

Well way back when the 8KHA+ came out and I went from a Asus A7V133 with a 1.33 266 and 256 mags of PC-150 to the Epox with 512 PC-2400 and a XP1900 it was like night and day,

Like Duhhhh! 😉 No offense but you are talking "night and day" differences! From 256 of PC150 to 512 of PC2400 and Athlon 1.33 to XP1900+!! If you didn't by God see a big difference you'd have big trouble. 😀:Q We are talking about more of a "head to head" comparison here, not a "no contest" comparison.

While I aggree you should sit were you are at right now and wait, I do think that more pc133 would be nice. And for the price might be a good idea.

You could spend $35 now for more pc133 to make your system last another 6 months to save you $150 in the future...

That's my experience with XP pro and 256mb of ram as well. All I had to do was start playing MOH:AA while I had another app running and I'd run out of physical memory and get bogged from swapfile access. I put in another 256mb stick and everything is gravy now. IMO 384mb is the least amount you want with that OS to insure best performance.

Hey all thanks for the help....

if its not too much trouble, could someone post the link to the exact ram I would need to add another stick of 256 megs of PC133 Crucial Ram for my K7S5A Motherboard?...I am currently using a stick of 256megs of PC133 Crucial ram and feel very comfortable with it but I dont really want to open up my system and pull out the ram to match the specs if I dont have to....thanks again if you can help out

Also, could anyone tell what new big features are available in today's current line of MotherBoards from any manufacturer and would it be anything that would be really useful to upgrade my K7S5A board. I really havent been following up on technology since I upgraded to the Athlon 1.4 and K7S5A motherboard

thanks again!

Here's the link for RAM for the K7S5A from Crucial.
Unfortunately, they are "out of stock" on the 128 and 256 MB sticks of PC133. They do have 64 and 512 MB. Knowing Crucial, this won't be the case for long. I'm sure they will have it back in stock soon.

As to your second question, that's a mouthful. Can you be more specific? Are you asking if you should upgrade to a different board and if so why? Even that you would have to be more specific.

tenoc has a point! All I've heard says use matching RAM. Might save you headaches to unbutton that case. Only takes a few mins, OR maybe you've got your receipt from other Crucial stick with #s on it.
