Is it worth it to upgrade from an Athlon 64 3200+ to a 3700+?

Simple question. I would like to upgrade but I am unsure if a step to the 3700 is woth it from my 3200 I have now. However, there is a massive jump in price from the 3700 to the 3800 and 4000. Any comments or suggestions? Thanks!

I was considering the dual core, but the cost is up there two, and my mutil-tasking is hardly necessary of the dual core ( I think...)

I would go with the 3700+. Its a little bit faster with a 1MB L2 cache instead of the 512KB L2 cache on tthe 3200+. Its a nice upgrade but if you have a bit more cash go with the 4000+.

I dunno. I've run my AMD64's overclocked and at default. Personally speaking, I'm not sure there's any game or application out there that even my lowly 3000+ can't handle, even when running at default. My games are the most CPU intensive apps I run and in all cases, I get more of a boost from upgrading my video cards than the processor itself. Just my two cents.

Upgrading from a 3200+ to a 3700+ isn't a big jump at all. Just overclock your Venice a bit. Games are all GPU bound anyways, so there's really not much of an improvement by upgrading to a 3700+. If you're going to upgrade, get a dual core Opteron 165.

No dont upgrade... you wont notice hardly any difference. other things like better ram or video will provide a MUCH greater benifit than that.

i mean come on!! the 3700+ is 200mhz higher and has 512 more L2 cache... just overclock the 200mhz and 512L2 cache wont make hardly any difference.

you didnt think about this before you posted did you....

I would say no. There is nothing the 3700+ can do that your 3200+ cannot do. My cpu is stock at 1.8Ghz, I can oc it up to 2.7Ghz if necessary, and even at that speed, there is not much difference in just about anything real world.

Save up for dual core.

I would say it's not worth it. Keep the 3200+ one since today's PC are becoming much less reliant on the CPU and more on the GPU and the RAM.

I notice quite a difference between my 3700+ and 3000+, but really they are both able to handle everything decently so unless you have a use/buyer for the 3200 I wouldn't bother.

No way......you won't notice enough of a difference to justify the money spent there......go video or ram!😉

I am not a huge fan of overclocking (the few times I have done so I had some issues), so I try to keep it at stock as much as possible. I also don't play FPS's to often anymore, but from time to time. The game I play is very intensive on RAM and processing speed. I was just curious as to whether or not the speed difference is noticeable or not.

Are the dual core chips noticeably faster when running once application? Or are they only effective when multi-tasking?

Oh, and I intend on getting new RAM - moving up to 2 gigs of the cas 2 XMS (hopefully). It would be alot easier on my wallet if I didn't have to buy an new CPU.

And I have a x800xl pci-e card. Seems capable of handling the few times I play some FPS games (and is COMPLETELY more than necessary for the game I constantly play).

I wouldn't bother with the CPU then if you're planning on investing in the RAM. CPU performance/cost is so far a head of software right now, it's just not worth it unless you're really bored have the cash to burn.

You're fine with the CPU you have presently. It would take a much faster one than what you have right now to make much of a difference so that you would really justify the upgrade. Afterall 200mhz is not much, even 400mhz might not be worth it unless you could get a great deal.

They're right, I think you would notice more if you added more ram, but your graphics card seems fine for right now unless you want to run everything on high settings.

NO. don't even think about it. save that money and upgrade your video card or add more ram down the road. this is assuming you don't already have a 7800gtx with 2GB of ram in which case I would sit tight and leave that rig alone.

Sounds good. I'll hold up on the CPU for later and go for the good RAM and maybe a new hard drive.

i would hang on to that cpu until M2 is out for a little while. upgrade video card when you get unacceptable FPS and low res

you refresh your system specs since yesterday? maby i missed something... dont get the corsair XMS. just get another gb of the hyperX stuff you have.. i have 1.5gb of it and looking to get another 512 and never had a problem with it. no use in just throwing away a gb of good ram! (unless you can sell it for a good price)

your video card is going to give you the biggest boost?? only in gaming... which you dont seem to do a whole lot of. like drum said... "upgrade video card when you get unacceptable FPS and low res"

Blow cash on the video card instead...thats where you see the biggest boost.

I wouldn't buy a videocard yet. In like 7-8 months the 7800 GTX(not the 512MB 7800 gtx) will be about 350 bucks or so - if you can wait until then, do it. The price for it will drop when the new videocards come out. I just bought a 6800GS only because I was low on budget and needed a videocard in-order to get a pci-express mobo. also, imo, you should have bought an opteron 146 or something instead of the 3200 when you first bought the cpu - you could have overclocked it to 3.0+ GHz easily(hell, opteron 144 can go up to 3.0 GHz. soon as I get my opteron 144, I am overclocking it to 2.5-2.7 GHz). opteron 144 > 3700 🙂

only opteron if you OC though
