Is it worth it to update firmware on my ocz ssd for trim?

I am using a ocz vertex series 30gb drive for my windows 7 64 bit boot drive. I don't believe it has trim and I haven't updated the firmware yet. Is it difficult or risky to try and update the firmware on my ocz ssd? Would I see any increase in performance? I'm only getting a 5.9 rating hard drive on windows experience. Would I be better off getting a newer drive like a G2 intel SSD?

Go to Device Manager, Disk Drives and double click on your Vertex drive. Go to the "Details" tab and then, from the drop down box, select Hardware ID's. You Vertex will be listed with a firmware. What firmware is listed?

On a side note, I believe a bigger drive would be better regardless. 30GB just seems so damn small, lol.

I know it doesn't support trim because I got it when it first came out and before trim was out.

That may be so but I'm trying to see what level of firmware that you currently have. You may not have an option to update the firmware yourself as OCZ has pulled a few of the firmwares (older ones) and they must be done in order from 1.1 to 1.3 to 1.4 to 1.5.

WTF? I'm not at home right now I'll check later and I'm not going through a big hassle to update it. I'll just buy an intel G2 drive and be done with it. Thanks

WTF indeed. They stopped issuing full firmware flashes because they were destructive (lost all data) and the fact that were fakes out there using the full flashes to make clone OCZ drives. They went to an "update" system in which one firmware makes updates to the previous level, hence why you have to go in order to get ALL updates. They are also non destructive in that only and update is applied, not a new, full firmware.

I'm pretty sure you can request destructive firmware if you ask them directly.

It is worth updating. Your 30gb drive is the slowest of the Vertex's, so it could use every little bit. Plus since it's so small it's probably already pretty full. Trim will help out drives that are pretty full.

I have the 00.p97 firmware on there. It looks from what I've read that I'll have to send it in to OCZ to have it flashed.

Unless you can get Praz, Noobtweaker or one of the others at the OCZ forums to send you a copy of 1.1. I think you can get 1.3 and up though but if you want them, I would hurry. ;)

I went from a pre 1 to 1.3, then to 1.4 to get trim support for my buddy.

I might still have them, I will check and let you know.

Also, do you have an intel SATA chip?

If not, you are SOL. You cant flash from that early of firmware with NVidia chipsets

Also, any format from I believe pre 1.3 means you have to format the drive.
