is it worth it to try photographing a lightning storm with a canon g3?

i think there's too much delay, and my precog abilities are a little rusty. of course, i won't know until i try, so i'm heading up to the roof. wish me luck

well, that was a pretty futile effort. there's too much ambient light to use a long exposure time without the whole shot washing out... times like this i wish i had a 35mm (or a faster camera), but oh well.

Hmm, do you think if you set the shutter to 15 seconds. And got the lightinging within that 15 seconds it would be enough light to show up on the photo?

Doesn't the G3 have a video capture mode? It won't be of a real high quality but it would capture lightning...

Turn on the ND filter so that you can set your shutter times to maximum (daylight shooting). You can also use the continuous shooting to keep taking picture after picture until the buffer or your card fills up depending on resolution.

Be careful of the roof. You don't want to slip if it is wet, nor do you want to become a lightning rod.

thanks, i'll try that next time (storm's over 🙁)

buy a cheap rubber lense hood to block out as much ambient light as possible. but i think the g3 requires an adapter to use it (or any threaded stuff).

lightning photography with digital cameras is very hard if you have no experience =( it's harder than fireworks photography cuz at least with fireworks, you have some warning of the "bloom"
