Is it worth it to overclock an AMD 64 2800+?

It would cost me a bit extra to do so, and I was just wondering if it's really worth it, since games these days are becoming less CPU dependant and the 64 2800+ is powerful as is. I appreciate any reasonable responses.

Also, if I don't overclock, should I still go with faster than PC-3200 RAM(PC-3700 I'm thinking). I hear that faster speeds are better than better timings with the AMD 64s.
 
I overclocked mine to 2.06 GHz. Doesn't take much to get it to that speed. Using the heatsink and cooling that came with it. Can't say its made any real difference since like you say, most games are more severaly limited by you graphics card. I just did it because I could, and its still stable. Makes me feel like I got more for my money. I would imagine that as the CPU demand of games goes up you'll see more of an affect.
 
if u dont overclock there is no reason to go higher than a pc3200... you might want to get some low latency pc3200.. but nothing higher than pc3200 for the non overclockers..

also i love overclocking.. i think its the best way to get your moneys worth.. but o/cing is never a garuntee and might mess up your computer if you don't know what you are doing
 
If it's any help to yah...

I have a Athlon 64 3000+ (2.0Core) running at 2.2GHz with the factory HSF and no AGP/PCI lock on my Asus K8V, I've had it up to 2.3 before and it ran fine until I hit a couple RAM issues (I only have PC2700). I'm probably gettin' some 3200 tomorrow then I can get it at least to hold at 2.3...

As far as making any difference...

In most games, not a whole lot... In UT2K4, however, yes, quite a lot...

Try running the Assault-Convoy level on you comp right now and check the framerate, then try running it after you O/C the thing 200MHz... myself, I got about an extra 10FPS on average just for 200MHz, that ain't too shabby! And the hottest temp I've seen out of it is about 51C.

I've got this Processor with a GIgabyte K8NS-Pro. Overclocking has been good so far. Has run stable all the way up to 2.2Ghz while underclocking my memory.

Just need to find out how to unlock the multiplier on this Chip.

Only the FX allows multi manipulation.
 
its always "worth it" to overclock in my opinion, you will see some differences in games even if its only by a few frames

I thought the 64 line was able to reduce multiplier, it just can't be higher than the default whereas the Athlon XP line is super locked to both lower and higher multis 😕

Also since memory can be run slower than the FSB with modern mobos and the use of ratios, I think impaqt is telling the truth.
 
On some motherboards like mine yes you can drop the multiplier but only Integers no .5's. I have 11-8 available to me but run mine on 10, 11 is stock for my chip. But doing so for some reason also limits me to 2.7 Vdimm.... Not sure why it didn't do that when I first got it. Kind of weird. hmm maybe I will grab that new thing from OCZ hehe.
 
motherboards that support cool n quiet allow you to lower the multi, but on the a64s you can't raise it. fx's are totally unlocked though.

No you are right, it was late and I'm on medicine for this danged cold. You can lower the multi on the 64's all you want, you just can't raise 'em. I shouldn't post under the influence.
 
The newer CG steppings of A64's OC very well. Mine does 2250 @ default voltage and 2385 @ 1.65v. Also newer games are not becoming less cpu dependent.
