<< Dont go to H&R block, if worse comes to worse, file an automatic extension (4 months) and find a real accountant. >>

Bad experience Sluggo, or do you know something we don't? Just curious.

DO a search for H&R block or taxes here at ATOT, there was a thread with some horror stories and the fact that they charge outrageous prices, and you might not get a person who knows a damn thing more than you do.

I might be wrong here but a lot of H&R Block people are just glorified data entry people who just get paid to ask questions from the forms, around here they run tons of ads every yrar looking for temp help. The CPA is knowledgable in actual tax
law .

They are people who have some tax background. As said before, it's frequently people who have gone to a local college and taken an individual income tax class. When I took individual income taxes the prof even asked us if any were wanting part time jobs at the tax places like that after we finished the class. the vast majority of the class were non-accounting majors who were specifically enrolled just to get a job at night "doing" taxes. A lot of the folks just didn't get it. And the ones who did, aren't going to work at H&R block for $7 or whatever it was an hour. I was really suprised at the number of folks in the class who were there trying to get those jobs. I'd say out of 40 people in the class I was in, maybe 6-10 were accounting majors.

I recommend doing it yourself, even if you make a lot of money, as long as you can understand them.

Although it takes me far more time to do the taxes myself than a good accountant would take, I really like to know and understand why I pay so damn much money in taxes.

As for accountants, I assume that you get what you pay for.

i've been using an accountant for about 4 yrs. and I will never go back.... have my norm job, plus self employment junk... and its a lot easier for me to just give him the papers and give him a check.

with the turbotax software, do u print out your stuff and mail it in, or does it also allow u to file electronically? i noticed that if u go thru turbotax's website, they'll charge me about $50. if i bought the turbotax software, will i still be charged $50, or is there no charge or a reduced fee?
