Is it worth it to leave VZW for a sidekick?

VZW's service is amazing, but the sidekick functionality is amazing, along with the price for service... discuss..

if you want ul text+internet+aol+email go for it. vzw will probably charge you closer to $100 for similar service and you still wont be able to use bluetooth.

plus its not like voice so coverage should not be that big of an issue.

i was reading over at howardforums i could get a data package (would that include IM, email, www?) + 450 peak mins + free n&w +in for 80 a month from vzw, is this true?

is a sidekick 29.99 for data, and then $39.99 to get free n&w?

Unless they changed it, it's $29.99 for a data-only plan. If you take a voice plan, then it's $20/month in addition to the cost of your voice plan.

So I have the $40/month voice plan + $20/month for Sidekick service = $60 total.

I think the Sidekick is the bee's knees. Can't be beat as long as you know what it is you're getting (it's not a blackberry or a treo).

T-Mobile is NEVER the best carrier in any area. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad, but at least the other major carriers can claim to have the best coverage in SOME areas. I would suggest getting one, trying it out for their introductory period (probably 14 days, I don't know for sure), and making sure you can use it FOR PHONE CALLS in the areas you want it to work in.

I had 5 friends that all decided that T-Mobile was the coolest carrier ever because of their superior coverage and number of minutes, and because if they were all with the same carrier, they could talk to each other for free. After a year, they couldn't take it any more and switched to Nextel. As bad as Nextel's coverage is, it was still better than T-Mobile.

Also, don't listen to what others in your area tell you because it's different for every person. I had INCREDIBLE coverage with my Sprint phone in my old apartment. I could move into any room and it wouldn't miss a beat. In my new apartment, I drop calls all the time, and I generally have to stay near a window to talk. I only moved a mile. I don't "blame" Sprint, per se, because I know that their coverage in general is great for me. But that doesn't mean their coverage in my new apartment is good, or that I'll stay with them.

explain?

I like to call the Treo and Berry "PDA first, Communication second."
The Sidekick is the opposite - "Communication first, PDA second."

What the Sidekick gives you:
Great keyboard
Arguably better form factor
Great web browser
AIM and Yahoo support right out of the box
Continuous mirroring of your data on the web interface
OK PDA functionality, but not great.

What the Sidekick does NOT give you:
Outlook sync out of the box
The ability to sync/backup to your PC
The ability to install and/or develop any application (you can only download apps that have been approved/published by T-Mobile)
The more powerful PDA functionality you expect from Blackberry or PalmOS (or PPC).

If your priorities are web browsing and IMing and having a good PDA is secondary, you will probably love the SK. If your priorities are having a good PDA or custom apps, the SK may not be for you.

I left Verizon for T-Mobile just because of the sidekick.. and guess what happened? I started wanting the better coverage. T-Mobile's coverage absolutely sucks.. I got at least 2 dropped calls/day and the damn thing wouldn't even work in my house. It sucks.. I would go with a Blackberry or another *newer*, more functional (if possible) device w/Verizon.

Is the VX9800 and the sidekick the only two functional QWERTY keyboard phones from major providers besides dealing with blackberries and PDAs?

Hmm... good question... I dunno right off hand.

But, I just switched back to Verizon and got the VX-9800... so far, I like it... but, I'm wanting more and Verizon doesn't offer a lot - actually, any free software for the phone. I would wait until somebody breaks this phone open and gets some nice apps for it.. I don't think it supports Java though (Brew?), but could be wrong.
