I took a Cisco course in the past and learned the basics of configuring routers and switches using Cisco IOS on 2600 routers, etc. However, since I havent used cisco equipment since I have forgotten most of it. My question is, is the cisco IOS on this older equipment being used in cisco's newer hardware? I'd like to know it, but at the same time if I'm not going to be able to apply that knowledge when configuring Cisco's newer equipment it isnt doing me any good.

Has IOS changed significantly from the early versions? Should I try learning with the latest version or will any be fine?

Thanks

How early are you talking? For the most part working with IOS stays the essentially the same.

What's more important is understanding the concepts of WHAT you're doing and the underlying networking fundamentals and the OSI model.

I'm not that familiar with Cisco equipment, but I'd say IOS shipped with hardware up to 5 years ago..

Yeah, I completely understand the need for that.

One thing that might have changed is that the switches now run on IOS and not on CatOS (except for the 6500, which can)
