is it worth it to get 3 year extra warranty from dell for my laptop?

I have the 600m, and someone from dell just called me if I want to get the 3 year warranty for $169

so is this a good idea? or is this a rip off??

I am usually VERY cautios with my laptop (ie, never drop them, spill water, etc)

so the only possible problem is the machine itself not working after a year...

so should I get this or not?

I get the gold complete care (Accidental breakage) on all laptops at work. Actually used it on two computers. Once the lcd was broken because the guy who used it put it in his luggage for the flight home. The other was dropped in the river. Good thing someone was right there to pick it up or we would have had to send a diver down. They do cover everything! Be careful because I know they won't sell that to a non-business in NY. Not sure about any other state.

again I am VERY careful with my laptop.... and only I will be using this laptop..

so the problem just lies on the system itself breaking down after a year.. not me dropping it or somthin...

its good if your prone to accidents or travel with it a lot. if your using it on a very regular basis (more than a few hours a day), its a very good idea to get it. I've had two diff laptops and the one with a 1 year warrenty broke exactly after that 1 year and they wanted to charge me what they thought was the still current retail price of it to fix it (sony laptop...LCD broke from base). The other was a toshiba that worked like a champ for the entire time i had it (1 year) so i dunno how that turned out.
so the problem just lies on the system itself breaking down after a year.. not me dropping it or somthin...
not a good way to think...not only do warrenties protect the thing from you but from OTHERS as well....what if you get in a car accident and the laptop goes flying into the dashboard? hopefully your ok but laptop might be ruined. Or what if someone is walking by with a drink and trip right onto your lappy...if its a girl it may be worth it ;) but laptop is screwed...so dont think that just cause ur careful will always mean other people will be as well..
If you only plan on using it for a year then its not worth it...let the next poor bastard you sell it to deal with it :p

with all due respect, i'm sure you'll be very careful, but accidents happen. That's why it's called complete care accidental coverage. ;)

Anyways I have a 600m, I have the complete care 3 year warranty, but when I got mine the warranty was free after rebate (still waiting for the rebate btw! :()

If you're a big spender I'd get it just for the extra peace of mind, it's really not a bad deal for 3 years of coverage.

you wannaa be using that same laptop 3 years from now?

prolly not... maybe Ill change after 2 years
Then don't get it.

but what if its broken after a year??? arghhhhhhhhhhhh

then get it

why not get the 2 year limited warranty? You can get warranties(including completecare) for up to 4 years, or as little as 1 year.

How did you pay for your laptop?

Debit/check or credit card?

Visa, MasterCard, Amex or other?

Which issuing bank?

I'd get the 3-year. You already made the mistake of buying a Dell, you should at least cover your ass now.

Once a student in one of my classes posed the question "How long does it take for wire migration to cause a component to quit working"

To which the professor thought for a min and then said, about 91 days.

Moral of the story, If its going to break on its own then it will happen just outside whatever waranty you get.

Id save the money and treat the laptop with care instead.

Yes it does matter because you may be eligible for an extra year of extended warranty coverage protection, however not all MasterCard's are eligible. To determine your eligibility call MasterCard at 1-800-MC-ASSIST give them your cc number and ask if you have extended warranty coverage or not.

My BOFA Alaska Airlines VISA does not, however my CitiBank Dividend Platinum Select VISA does.

I just called MasterCard Card Benefits at 1-800-622-7747.

Although my Chase Perfect Card says Platinum on it, they show it as a Gold card. I was told as long as my credit line is $2,000 or more (it's $2,500) then I DO have extended warranty coverage.

It's nice to have finally found this out :) all future electronic/computer purchases will be going on this card earning a 1% cash rebate :)

Get it!
Dell is in no way more reliable than any other laptop, AND LAPTOPS BREAK.

No.

I think the Chase Freedom and Perfect Card are two different products. As a matter of fact I don't even see the Chase Freedom card on their web site.

Your best bet is to call MasterCard Card Benefits at 1-800-622-7747, give them your credit card number and ask if your card offers extended warranty coverage or not.

Trust me, get it. I'm very careful with my laptop too and I've had my harddrive, video card, and motherboard replaced within the last year. Stuff happens and it's very hard to fix this stuff yourself.
