Is it worth installing Windows XP on an old laptop with only a Pentium 2 cpu?

If you have 256MB of RAM, or better yet 512 then yes.

I would personally do Win2000 on that machine. But if you have the RAM, it'll work.
 
Yeah, I'm still using Win 98SE updated and tweaked to the nth. I hope you got the Windows Security Update CD while it was available - saves a bunch of online time getting it current...
